How to Make a Gorgeous Mirror Candle Centerpiece

September 15, 2009

How to make a beautiful glass candle and mirror centerpiece with a soft glow!

This DIY decorative table centerpiece is perfect for a long dining or kitchen table!

This unique mirrored candle holder can be changed up so easily for the seasons, or just left alone for pretty everyday home decor.

I've mentioned before that there were many things I didn't love about our dining room before: gold and brown dining roomOne of the biggies was the centerpiece. I don't do centerpieces. I'm OK with the little kitchen table, but big, long dining room tables I am totally at a loss for.

I always imagine some gorgeous expanse of something...just never knew what that something was.

Then I saw an idea on HGTV a few months ago, and I started gathering up my supplies over time.

More on that in a bit!

A few weeks ago while walking through Target, looking at the back to school stuff (and wishing it was fall decor, puhleeze), I saw a $4 mirror in the college supplies, and it hit me.

I knew exactly what I was going to do!

I grabbed the mirror:
turn a mirror into centerpiece
It was CHEAP, flimsy, easily breakable.

So I carefully pulled off the craptastic frame:
long mirror centerpiece
I was left with the flimsy mirror and the paper backing. I left that on, just so I wouldn't have to risk breaking the glass. Or maybe it's that I was lazy. I don't know.

Anyhoo...I found some extra plywood in the garage and went to Lowe's to have it cut down to the size I needed -- one foot by four feet.

I used this handy dandy glue all over the plywood:
liquid nails glueAnd just set the paper-backed mirror down on it.

I wiggled it around for a bit, to make the glue smoosh around and adhere, and then turned the whole thing upside down so the weight of the plywood would create a good seal.

I did all this on the floor, so everything was level.

Then, I took some of the fab, chunky molding from my DIY Ballard Designs shelves (I swear this stuff is going up all over my house!) and cut it with my miter saw to fit right over the mirror:
mitered corner decorative trim
It was a bit too stark for me at first, so to get the distressed look you see above, I used my handheld sander, and scuffed up the edges just a bit:distressing white trim

I wanted the distressing to look like the color of the table, so I took my itty bitty can of walnut stain:
walnut stain minx

I used a foam brush and wiped it on the bare wood, then used a wet paper towel to quickly wipe it off.

This was the result:
staining distressed wood
The items I have been gathering for months are simple glass candle holders: glass cylinder centerpiece
I varied the candle holder size to give it some interest. You could go up and down like I did or star from the middle with the tallest. Anything goes!

Most of these I got for $1 and $2 at Goodwill. I think only three I actually purchased at Hobby Lobby, for half off.

These don't have to be brand new, perfect condition because you'll be covering them!

The most I paid was $10 for the largest one in the middle. It was freaky weird that I ended up with almost exact pairs of sizes over a span of a few months.

I didn't plan it that way, but it worked out perfect!

My inspiration was from an HGTV show where they wrapped similar holders with gauzy fabric, and it created such a pretty glow.

So I got fabric for just a few bucks in white, and using double-sided tape, I wrapped all of them:
white gauzy fabric
They aren't perfect on one side, but if anyone ever noticed that in person, I'd give them a gold star, for real.

Or a cookie. Whatever they'd rather have for being insanely observant. ;)

You'll notice in this picture, even though I had painted it all out, the plywood was really noticeable on the bottom:
decorative trimI tried to live with it, I did.

But it looked so unfinished to me, it was giving me the heebies. I struck gold yesterday in the garage when I found extra molding I had used in the room.

It was perfect to wrap the whole thing: molding around DIY mirror tray
Ahhhh, yes. I can stop itching, the hives are gone.

It is beautiful on it's own, but I crave WARM, so luckily this is just the time of year to get that.

I added more beady thangs:

Some cutie little smell-good pinecones:
fall centerpiece beady decor
And it's really, really lovely: white fabric around glass candle holdersInstead of placing the candles directly in (that may make a wax mess later), I used smaller votives inside.

They provide plenty of light for that soft glow!

Just THINK of all the ways you could use a centerpiece like this:
  • Of course, it would be lovely dressed up for Christmas with greenery, ornaments and battery-operated twinkle lights!
  • See the cute Easter/spring table setting I created with this DIY mirror tray.
  • What a beautiful idea for wedding centerpieces at a reception or bridal shower! You could use round mirrors or trays to fit your table size.
  • The mirror can be used all kinds of ways -- not just with pillar candles inside the cylinders, but with tapers in brass candlesticks.
  • Use the mirror centerpiece as a "charcuterie" tray -- line with paper first if you plan to eat off it. Pile your crackers and cheese along the this long DIY tray for a fun display.
  • Shorter, regular votive candles in decorative glass will allow guests to see each other across the table!

Here's our view of it is as I peek around the corner: DIY long mirror centerpiece
Can't show you the window updates just yet -- that's next. ;)

I really adore this. It's a simple and classic design, but it can be dressed up so easily.

And this isn't just for the table -- when I was working on it, I held it up to the wall and realized how gorgeous it would be hanging too...I may make another to do just that!

Although it's pretty during the day, it is just stunning at night:

That soft, diffused light gives it such a romantic feeling!

See how great it looks on my moody fall tablescape here!

(I'm an ex-floral designer). haven't finished my post yet, so stop by tomorrow for a looksie. I like your clean holiday displays - so beautiful. But I tend to gunk it up w/loads of ribbon and florals - just my way, I guess.

Please visit my blog when you have a chance. I mostly write about funny things and being married to a pastor, but I am working on adding pics and things and talking about decorating a little. Take a peek when you have a second. Until then, I'll keep stalking your blog for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Love it! I too have collected clear glass cylinders over time, well...anything clear glass really, as it is so versatile! I put together a similar centerpiece for Christmas using cranberries and mini glass ball ornaments. I like how you wrapped the cylinders, nice effect. I've done it before using vellum...printing out pictures onto the vellum (black and white works best), the warm glow of the candle is quite pretty behind the photos. I'd thought about spelling out something for the holidays this year on the vellum for something different. Keep the ideas coming! Oh, and I too am a HUGE SLAH fan...people think I'm a consultant as I own so much!! LOL

P.S. I bought the last two pumpkins at my Dollar Tree last week, too! Too funny! I need to check some others to see if I can find just 1 more! I'm OCD like that, too!

  132. Gorgeous Center piece! It looks fantastic. I just hope you put some felt circles or something on the bottom so it doesn't scratch the beautiful wood of your table. I love it! I am hosting Thanksgiving this year and am in need of a good centerpiece for my huge table. Thanks for the inspiration to keep digging!.

  140. LOVE this! At first glance they look like the tall paper Chinese lamps, which again I heart. Wonderful idea.

  141. Ooooooh. Love your centerpiece. I bookmarked your blog months ago - before I learned about subscribing and reader and all of that. I went back to my bookmarks tonight for some new inspiration and came back here and I am so glad I did. Thanks for sharing. My most recent post was on decorating with lighting. We seem to like similar things. I will be checking back.

  143. I love that, Sarah! I can't imagine me or my husband redoing molding, lol, so I'd probably have to live with the craptastic look...I bet it can be concealed a bit with something though...hmmmm...So pretty!

  145. I'm finally getting back in touch with my creative side now that I'm no longer working and an empty nest is in sight. I could spend all day reading blogs, but with this project I'm going to get out of my chair and get to work. Love it!

  146. I just bought a mirror today to try this myself. I am wondering...if you had it to do over, would you LEAVE the frame attached to the mirror since you had to eventually go back and add trim to the bottom since you didn't like it? Mine is black if that makes a difference.
    Thanks!

  147. Wow, I love this. For people like me who are not sure about taking the plunge into full-throttle seasonal decor, this gave fall and winter vibes in a very stylish and doable way!

  148. I loved this for its simplicity and elegance. I saw it about a month ago and I began subscribing to your blog. The problem was that I subscribe to probably 18 to 20 blogs. I couldn't remember where I saw this. I am doing my own version and I am hoping it is okay to use one of your pictures - giving you credit of course. Please let me know if this is going to be a problem. I will do this post later this week.

  149. So I totally copied your dining room centerpiece and I LOVE it! Thank you so much for the great inspiration:) My only glitch is I want that SAME fabric that you used (or something really similar;). I cannot find it anywhere:( I keep finding gauzy fabric that is plain or with a floral pattern which is NOT what I want.

Do you have any more info. on the fabric that you used by any chance?

  154. Your centerpiece is stunning! I was wondering how tall the tallest candle holder is? Also, are you burning real candles/tea lights or are you using battery operated lights in them?
