RIP Squishy (and come see me!)

fishWell, Squishy croaked. Or choked. Can a fish choke? I don’t know, but hubby checked on him the other night (he did every night, isn’t that adorable?) and all I heard was “Uhhh…honey? Did you feed the fish?”

Poor Squish was a floatin’. I almost cried. I couldn’t believe it! He was fine when I fed him the night before, and I saw him eating his food. But the food was still floating too. So sad! Squishy the Second will join us soon I’m sure.

If you’d like to see how I made his home, go here.

I know I promised the coffee table today, but I got caught up on another project and lost the good light to take pictures. :) Hate when that happens. I realized I forgot to remind you all about the Indy Home Show next week anyway:

Indy_125x125

I’ll be speaking two times a day on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday:

Monday, 2/1 -- 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Tuesday, 2/2 -- 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Wednesday, 2/3 -- 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Monday the topic is molding and woodwork, Tuesday is using fabric and Wednesday is transforming Goodwill finds. Most of the presentations you all have probably seen on this blog at some point but I don’t care, come put your butt in some seats!!!!!!!!

Sheesh, sorry. Can you tell I’m afraid I will hear crickets? :)

I would love to meet you!

Have a great weekend, and I hope you will link up on Monday (probably late Sunday night) at the next Before and After Party!

  1. Awww, sorry to hear about Squishy! Our Beta died too! So sad. We are going to wait until the Spring. I've heard they cannot get too cold?

Wish I lived closer and you bet I'd be there!

  2. AHHHH!!! I'm in South Bend- *so close, yet so far away* :| I woould LOVE to hear what you have to say (crickets or no crickets, haha) Dang, I have to find a babysitter.....

So sorry about Squishy. I have a beta- "Tod", who seems as though he's on his way out too. But this fish has had us all fooled... He's 5 years old!

  3. Ahh, I'm so sorry! We lost our beloved beta on Christmas eve - RIP King Ned Blue Red. We have a newbie named Sir Firewater. Thankfully young kids bounce back quickly, but my eldest (5) has mentioned his lost beloved friend a few times since. Good luck next week -wish I were closer; I'd be there in a heartbeat!

  4. Sorry about Squishy! We had an emergency with out cat today and I thought for sure he wasn't going to make it.

It turns out he just has a UTI, but I have honestly never seen so much blood.

  5. Poor Squishy. I'm sure he had a great life.

  6. Sorry about Squishy. My sister lost her beta, Jonah, but it was at the hands (paws) of Lucy the cat. Ouch. I would love to see a recap or video of your presentations. Good Luck.

  7. Did you have a hole so oxygen could get in there? They actually need more oxygen than most people think - when we got ours I did a lot of research and was surprised. I actually ended up getting a tank with a filter for him because that is what they recommended.

  8. Ewww. I hate hate hate dead fish. It grosses me out SO much. Probably has something to do with the fact that growing up the fish tank was right next to breakfast table and my mom would always wait to take them out until AFTER we ate. Poor little guy though, at least he got a really tank while he was alive!

  9. So sorry to hear about sqishy. I don't know what we'd do if any of our fish croaked it, they all have their own little personalities and are a part of the family. Ours even come to the surface and take the flakes from our hand.

I'm with a previous commenter though, even goldfish need good filtered aerated water. If you see it sucking air at the surface, that's a sure sign. It's because they live in their toilet (not to put too fine a point on it) and the toxins are killer to them.

Filter, moving water (preferably a flow that breaks the surface water for them) and small partial water changes regularly should keep them healthy.

I did wonder how how you'd fit a filter in the gumball machine when you first posted about it though.

  13. Sorry about squishy. How long did he last? My kids both want a fish for their bedrooms. Trying to decide between a beta or a goldfish. And I love his gum ball machine home. I've been keeping my eye out for one, but haven't found one yet.

  14. Awww I started following your blog when my friend sent me the link to Squishy's home how to. I laughed so hard at a fish being named Squishy that I knew I had to follow!

I LOVE the indy home show! I can't come during the week though because I'm a teacher :( (love teaching, not loving that I can't come see you!). Well I guess I'll think of you and be wishing I was there while I'm teaching away on the east side!

  15. Aww sorry your fishy died....I ended up giving away our entire fishtank on freecycle because we 'traded' some baby fish for a friend's baby fish and the new fish ATE all my other fish then wouldn't die! (They were an ugly brown/black/muddy color and MEAN)
I mean I lovingly took care of all those lovely orange/yellow baby fish and then when we decided we had too many of one type of fish we traded a few and I woke up to half-eaten dead baby fish!! SO MAD I tell you lol! We were nervous to get other fish for fear the muddy ones would eat them too. So after 2 years of waiting for them to die (I mean fish don't live long right?) I just Freecycled them & the tank lol

  16. Awww, we didn't have much luck with our Beta fish either, Al and Sal. Al died and then we got Al #2 (so my daughter wouldn't know the original Al died) and Sal. While changing the water in the fish tanks (yup, i had 2 tanks) Al flopped out of the cup I had him in and since I don't do slimy, yucky stuff, I sort of freaked out and let him flop to his death. I know, i'm HORRIBLE! Then like a week later, Sal died for no apparent reason. No more fish for us! lol

    Goodbye, sweet Squishy!

  19. Good luck! I have no doubt you'll be great. If my butt could get there to fill a seat, it would.

    P.S. So sorry about Squishy.

  20. If I lived anywhere close I would be there for sure! I am sure the turn out will be stupendous! Poor Squishy, I am sure he was a good fish. He a happy life in if beautiful home. We had a bird when my kids were little among other various pets. One day Tweetie got out of his cage and flew into the back-splash and right into a pot of soup..Ugh. I had to get it out (it wasn"t hot thank goodness) I called the vet to see what to do for him he was all soupy! When the vet stopped laughing he told me to clean him at and just wait and see. Well 3 days later, when I went to feed him..he was dead. I was glad the kids were at school. I buried him the back yard and put the cage away......about 3 months later My son said..."MOM WHERE IS TWEETIE?" I told he died....3 MONTHS AGO! The sadness went pretty fast and he asked he that meant he could have a hamster. I told him..of course it does.:-) The circle of life.

do not say any of the following words/phrases:
    1. lurve
    2. ca-ute
    3. umkay
    4. I have issues

Trust me. It may sound mean, but I'm doing you a favor.

  26. Oh poor Squishy! At least he had a nice home to live in right? My fish Skitzo died too...in a sad sad lame old fishbowl. Poor Skitzo!

  27. Anon, my ten years of working as a professional in the marketing field and my 13 years experience speaking to groups has more than prepared me for this engagement.

But now I think I'll throw in a "cauuuute" just for kicks. You inspired me.

  30. So sorry about Squishy. I would LOVE to come meet you and "put my butt in a seat". Sadly, it is quite a long drive from Utah. I think my family might notice if I disappeared for that long. ;)
Good luck, I bet you will do a fabulous job!

  31. Poor squishy. Sorry for your loss. I know it is just a fish but you can't help but love every member of the family.

  32. I was really excited to try and make the gum ball tank for our little beta "Sid". Unfortunately Sid didn't last long enough for me to get around to geting the glass cut for the hole (and I already have a gum ball machine!). He died about a week ago and I haven't had the heart to tell our daughter. I really didn't like having the added responsibility of taking care of a fish (he was a birthday gift), but the gum ball machine (and knowing that my daughter will be crushed once she finds out) is kind of tempting me to get another Sid.
I did have a question for you though... I got my gum ball machine from goodwill for a couple of bucks about a year ago. Actually it's a Jelly Belly machine, and it has a big Jelly Belly logo right across the glass. Do you know how to get that off? I was thinking of trying goo gone, but I'm not sure if that will work because it's not really sticky gooey like most stuff you use goo gone on. Any ideas? Thanks.
Good luck with your speaking, I wish I lived close enough to come, but if I did I would for sure be on the front row. And I'm not really a front row person, but for you I would.

  33. That is a cute idea. When we were in high school, my brother took an old blender that didn't work and converted it into a goldfish tank. It was the funniest thing, to see that fish swimming around in a blender! I don't think the fish was in there for very long, it was rather crowded.

  35. I would love to come see your sessions, unfortunately I live way up here in Canada. Good luck and I am sure you will do an awesome job, especially about the thrift store transformations. I too am a thrifty decorator and love getting ideas from you.

  36. Poor, poor Squishy. Was the Bubs upset at all?

  38. We've hung many a tv in our day. I've never seen the cable hiding done the way you did. Where did you plug your stuff in and how does it all work out with that hole being so high up from a plug?

  39. Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that!
