Organizing the inspiration

Hey all! Some of you may have noticed that Blogger was down for awhile this week, and when it came back up, my last post lost all of it’s comments. So if you left a comment with a suggestion (I’m looking for perennial ideas), I would love it if you would add it to the comments again. (I reference them later!)

Speaking of referencing ideas. ;)

Many of you have asked how I organize all of the DIY project ideas that fill my brain. You know, those ideas that pop into my head right as I’m falling asleep and then keep me awake at night. (For reals…it’s sad.)

If it’s something I want to make sure not to forget, I’ll write it down on a notepad. I have one I’ve written ideas on for years. But many of my projects are born from inspiration I see in magazines or online.

Up till a couple weeks ago, my main method for organizing those was a binder:

image

I showed you my loverly binders on this paper organizing post – and one of them is filled with pages I tear out of magazines. I have four categories – walls/art, holiday, general projects, and general decorating ideas.

Some ideas I’ve had in there for years, like this project:

And I’ve had the supplies for it all that time too. ;) Need to get on that.

I love these fence pots:

fence post planters

And I look at them every summer and haven’t done it yet. ;)

I keep lots of how-to’s, like this one for all types of bows:

IMG_4812

And this one for the proper way to prune a bush:

Most of the sheets are just pictures of beautifully decorated spaces. This Pottery Barn gallery wall is one of my favorites:

IMG_4811

Love those lights at the top!

Every once in a while I’ll look back at my filed pictures and wonder what in the heck I wanted to remember. So I started writing on the pages:

IMG_4819 IMG_4820

The binder is stuffed FULL with ideas. But the problem is, I rarely have a few extra moments to sit and peruse my pretty binder. And if I do have an extra few minutes, you know I’m usually painting something. :)

Then I heard about Pinterest. It’s such a FUN way to organize and categorize all of the inspiration I find online:pinterestview

I was so scared of it for the longest time – it seemed like it would be so complicated and all…technical. Me and techy don’t mix. ;)

But I tell you what – I had it figured out in about three minutes and I haven’t stopped “pinning” since.

When you sign up you just drag the “Pin It” icon up to you tool bar and whenever you’re online and see something you love, it just takes a click on that little button. It pins it into the category you specify, just. like. that.

You can also follow others and see what they’re pinning, and I find most of my ideas from those I follow. It’s awesome. I’ve already found SO MANY beautiful projects I want to try!

Like outdoor projects:

Or fun stuff, like how to make moon sand:

The stuff is evil, but the Bub loves it.

There’s all kinds of helpful tips I didn’t know about, like how to remove a stripped screw:

A bunch of yummy recipes and ideas:

fourth of july strawberries

And plenty of good old beautiful decor ideas:

red door kitchen

I LOVE that red door!

My favorite part is that it saves the permalink when you save from your computer – so you just save it to your account, and you can always go back later to see more details.

You can also load pictures from your computer and if you have an iphone and the new app, you are supposed to be able to take photos and load them, although it hasn’t worked for me yet. :)

Although many bloggers use it – I think it’s a great resource for anyone! I have a girlfriend who does does a lot of etsy searching for the fantastic birthday parties she throws for her kids. This is a perfect way for her to save those ideas!

It really is SO FUN. It’s easy to get sucked in though – you’ll go in for two seconds and be on for an hour. And all of the sudden I want to search the Internet for every idea I’ve ever had, just so I can pin them. ;)

The only kicker is you have to be invited by someone who has a Pinterest account, or you can request an invite on their site. I hear that takes a few days to come through though.

If you would like a invite, send me an email and I’ll try to send you one! I’m not sure how many I can send out, but I’ll invite as many as I can (and as many as I can get to!)

So there you have it – two ways to organize the inspiration! One for the magazines, one for online ideas. I’m definitely referring more to the online method now that I’m using Pinterest.

**My friend Beth created a great tutorial on how to use Pinterest! Check it out here.

***I have no affiliation with Pinterest, I just love it. :)

  1. I so want to peruse your inspiration files...now just to find all those things you just listed in your post. Love it! The red door (hubs would never agree), the lights, and I so needed that stripped screw hint for my new IKEA bookshelves. Thanks so much for double inspiration! (and yes, it is EVIL!)

  10. I would love an invite. I have requested one from them weeks ago and haven't received one. My binders turned into file folders years ago, and though I've tried scanning and keeping track on my computer, that just takes too much time. Thanks for trying to add us to Pinterest! 12. Can I get an invitation please??? I have a binder...and page protectors...and stacks of magazines so I can collect all the pictures that inspire me, but here I am years after I was inspired to start a binder and my binder is still empty. I'm too lazy to cut out all those pages and organize them. Maybe Pinterest is exactly what I need! I thought about exploring it awhile ago but realized I needed to be invited so never pursued it. I would be honored to be invited by the most inspiring blogger I follow!

  16. would love an invite--thanks! as for perennials, i love my knockout roses. they don't have to be deadheaded or pruned and are insect and disease resistant (though japanese beetles like them). creeping phlox stays green all year long and is beautiful in the spring. i also have something called purple heart (a friend called it wandering jew--but that is usually a green house plant). just be sure it has plenty of room, because it gets huge! butterflies and bees love it.

  32. I am so addicted to Pinterest too. I keep telling myself I need to stop looking and start doing! I used to save everything to my favorites and this is so much better because you can pull it up on any computer and if your computer should crash (heaven forbid) you still have all of your stuff saved in Pinterest. @Karen, I just did a google search the other day for a friend (I have the same picture on my pinterest) and if you look for pot hangers, there are a lot of different types of brackets that would work for hanging the pots on the fence.

Thank you for sharing about Pinterest. I have heard of it, but never really went to check it out. Being somewhat techie things generally come to me fairly quickly, so when I read this post I knew I needed it! I will be working on adding all my online "lurves" in the coming week.

  84. Perennials - love reblooming iris (blooms early and later on in season), hydrangea, butterfly bushes (just saw one to do in a pot in Spring Hill Nursery catalog) and I plant sedum in pots for Fall color. Iris are great as they multiply and you need to split every 2-3 years! The white "Immortality" has been phenomenal. I split this year and had plenty to give to several relatives.

The one thing I hate is when someone on pinterest 'pins' from the home page of a blog and if you try to link to it from the pin months later it has moved somewhere into the blog history, nearly impossible to find! I try to remember to click on the actual blog post before hitting the Pin button.

  99. This was a great post. I like to "tear out" my favorite ideas too, but seem to just lay them around and then lose them! I need that binder. As far as ideas, I write a mom blog and carry that trusty notebook around for when I get the "perfect post topic." I have even jumped out of the shower to my notebook before...LOL!!! I also sell Scentsy products at http://BlogWithMom.scentsy.us Now that I am completely addicted to Scentsy products, I am constanting placing Scdentsy products ALL OVER my house. Just how many warmers is too many! It's scentsy's fault if I have too many, they just have too many to pick from!

  118. I am fairly new to reading craft blogs and I am so excited to find out I'm not the only nut who rips stuff out of magazines, keeps catalogs that are years old or reorganizes her supplies/stuff/junk incessantly! (Yea! I'm not a freak!!) Anyhoo, I see you've got quite a line of requests going here, but if you feel like you can do one more, I'd love an invite. JandRBarber@yahoo.com
P.S. I am def moving you to my "Love It" blog list! Thanks!!

  127. I ran across your blog searching tips to decorate my mantel. I'm a little late on this bandwagon, but I'm in the same boat as all your readers...I love keeping up with decorating/makeover ideas! I have been saving ideas in my word processor all these years but your method seems so much better. If it is still possible to send out invites, I would love one so I can join in on all the excitement. My email is bsmom@aol.com. Thanks a bunch!

  128. If you still have the ability to invite others to pinterest... i would love to get on board! When i read this post originally, i had requested an invitation from pinterest a few times so i figured i would soon be pinning... but i have still not heard back (and maybe it's sad, but i've been requesting an invitation from them everyday :)

Thanks either way! Love your blog,
