Foyer updates through the years

November 19, 2012

We recently changed up our laundry/mud room by moving the washer and dryer to the new laundry in the basement, so we have a dedicated space for our mud room off the garage now. Let. me. tell. you. It is AWESOME. It still has no storage, the baseboards have been torn out (for a YEAR), the walls need paint badly, but it doesn't matter. We luuuuuurve it!!

It’s a long way off from looking cute again, but at this point I don’t care:

yes, this is real

There’s MUCH to be said for just being able to walk through a space!! :)

Our entry way has cathedral ceilings and is just a tiled area open to the rest of the house. I found some old pics to show how the space has changed over the years – first, just after we moved in when I installed the wainscoting:

And then with a new rug, a little table and some art:

Notice the pink walls? Yeah, they were everywhere. SO GLAD to be rid of them!

I added a Craigslist dresser a couple years ago and not much has changed since:

One of the big projects I’d like to tackle next year is the tile:

It’s a gray tile that we picked out to go with those lovely pink walls so it comes across a little purple. We could have taken some of the tile out and extended the wood floors last fall, but I thought it would be best to keep the tile there for the winters. I didn’t want to stress about wet shoes/boots and snow on the wood floors. I’d love to do a creamy tile in a brick pattern perhaps?

I painted the inside of the door black last year (I showed you the how-to here):

I still plan on painting all of our interior doors darker – I love the look! That project is 349 on the long list. ;)

That dresser will get a paint job soon too – the black looks a little heavy for me now. I’m just waiting till I decide on the perfect color. It’s always a fun spot to decorate – right now it’s super simple with fall-inspired decor:

  3. Thanks for adding mud rooms to this - my foyer is quite boring really, but I like what I have in the mud room department. ;-)

  4. No! I like the tile and dresser! Although the door and dresser matching does seem to be a bit much. Hmm....

  7. My mudroom is non existent. LOL My laundry room that you walk into from the garage is 5x8 at best. Add in washer and dryer and it doesn't leave much space. We are in the process of adding a board and batten treatment in there and added hickory upper cabinets and that small space next to the washer, we squeezed in a small laundry tub/sink. My entry/foyer is small as well. That also is a work in progress. Hopefully they will be done. Maybe if you are doing these next fall, I can add mine.

  8. Yay link parties! They are so fun and full of many great ideas. Also, love that you moved the laundry. Can't wait to see the evolution. Of course I am droooling with envy since our entry way smacks you right into the living room.

  13. I love your blog so much- becuase you broke the door glass, and had dust all over form the cabinet door painting, and because you give me hope that despite my mis-steps, I can at least TRY, and that you've done such beautiful things while at the same time teaching us via your mistakes. You are really, truly an inspiration. Because of you, I painted my teeny, grubby looking, non-lighted closet sky blue with cream trim and added a cute little lantern for light. It's a haven a peace and prettiness in a completely not decorated room, and I love it! Thank you!

  16. What about something like this:

maybe not the piece but the reclaimed wood look? Or maybe it's white washed I dunno. OOOR this that is not nearly as expensive: (since you like things on casters)

  17. You're a genius! I was just thinking last night about finding some time to dig up inspiration for my entryway. I have some cute hooks that I've been meaning to put up for over a year, and I want to make a bench for sitting/storage to go in the corner, but I don't want to make the space too tight and cluttered (you know, because sometimes it's too hard to hang the kids' coats up in the closet right away, but they're not exactly what I want to display to everyone who comes in my house). This makes my "inspiration hunt" so much easier! THANKS!

  22. I just wanted to share with you that we painted the grout on our tile entrance way. The tile has a hint of pink in it, but when the grout was painted, it changed the tile color, and we really like it now!

  25. How about some help for those of us that have zero entryway. I live in a one story ranch home that the front door walks right into the living room.
We have a fairly small living room. There is room for 1 couch, 1 loveseat, 1 chair and a coffee table. the tv is on the other wall.
Not a nook anywhere....Oh, and we have an 84" window on the wall that shares the front door.
I don't want to use a coat rack (upright one) and I'm a bit apposed to hanging a board with hook because it doesn't always look nice and neat. Ideas for us out there because there are tons of us with not a ton of ideas available.
