Burgundy and green fall tablescape

October 01, 2013

If you’ve been following along over the years you know I got a wild hair a couple years ago and decided to get rid of our dining room and turn it into a library. It’s still in process but we LOVE it so far.

For a while this meant I really didn’t have a table to dress for the seasons (we had our round kitchen table). Not a big deal but I’m a decorating fiend and a blogger so I did miss that part a bit. But since I made our new, bigger table earlier this year, I’m able to join in on the festivities again. Whoot!

I started with a blank slate of the DIY tabletop:

DIY farmhouse table

I tried to use what I already had for the most part – I love our round IKEA chargers so those and my basic white plates were first:

white plates

I got the napkins at Pier 1 – LOVE them but they only had three and I needed four. So I ended up with two of the prints and two solids that matched. I like how it turned out.

The plates felt nekked when I was done so I added some gourds I picked up last weekend on each plate:

Like a smarty I only got three of the green and three of the orange – so I had to mix those up too. I was on a roll.

I created the whole table setting based around the pink flowers you see here:

I LOVE them – I can never remember what they’re called but I always see them in the fall. Any idea what they are? The bring pink is a wavy/felty feeling one and the longer ones are fuzzy and fun. They played perfectly with more hydrangeas from my pee gee trees. (You can see how I used those on the mantel here.)

I wanted to carry the flowers down the table a bit so I filled a Goodwill set with little bits of the flowers as well:

There’s a lot of Goodwill on this table – the little white creamer set, the copper sprayed candlesticks, the water goblets and glass hobnail votive holders are all from Goodwill over the years:

I love the glass aisle at Goodwill – it always draws me in. I can’t quit it.

At first I planned on putting a runner down the table, but I really wanted to see the table I worked so hard on. :)

My goal (like with the mantel) was to use more natural items and some items I already had. I didn’t want it to scream FALL – I wanted it to whisper. *Fallll.*

I think it whispers:

Last night after I took pics the Bub asked why we were going to eat pumpkins. Love him.

This morning it was dark and rainy and I took the opportunity to light the candles again and take a few more shots:

It’s no fancy dining room but I love it. ;)

I think we’ll eat by candlelight tonight!:

This kind of thing is so fun for me – just puttering around and adding things, taking them away, arranging them just so. Hope it inspires you just a bit! :)

Do you have a dining room or just a kitchen table? I thought I would miss the dining room table more than I do – but I really don’t! It was a good choice for us for sure but wouldn’t be for everyone.

  1. Very pretty! I have no idea what kind of flowers those are, but they are so fun!

  2. We have a wonderful round table in our breakfast nook. we eat their every meal but Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas (and Eve), and Birthdays. Right now our dining room table is my "store" as I have about five different preserved boxwood on it, fabric rolls for projects, MMSP, trim mouldings...It has to be off by Thanksgiving! Your table is simple and very pretty. Perfect balance of family friendly and classy :)

  5. I love it! The colors are beautiful. We got rid of our dining room as well and gave the room to our girls since it is larger. They prefer to share a room at their young age and we are not really formal people so now I need to decorate my table as well. Thanks for showing us!

  6. I think the ruffly looking pink flower is cockscomb. I was in Nashville, IN a few weeks ago and there is a little shop that grows these and sells the seeds. I would have never known this before then.

  10. I can't see the one flowers well enough, but the ruffly one is called celosia.
I love how your setting turned out. The colors are perfect.
Our dining room table (and all our dishes) has been packed up for three months in order to have our makeshift kitchen in there during the never-ending remodel. So I haven't decorated ANYTHING for fall anywhere in the house yet. It will just get a layer of construction dust on it, so......But I did stick some pee gee hydrangea flowers in the wall vases in there, and I'm excited to bring in some fall leaves for the mantel. The rest will have have to wait a wee bit longer. We're getting clooooooser. :)

  11. Beautiful! We only have a (small) round kitchen table. No dining room for us. But for Thanksgiving, we push all of the furniture out of the way and turn our living room into a dining room. It's fun! :)

  14. Since you have multiple names for your flowers I thought I would clear that up. Everyone was correct, it just depends what they are known by in your part of the country.Cockscomb flowers are also known as Wool Flowers or Brain Celosia, suggestive of a highly colored brain. The flowers belong to the amaranth family, Amaranthaceae.

  16. We got rid of our dining table and chairs and turned our dining room space into a nice home office and den. We hardly used the dining room and it became a pile up space for "stuff". I've been following your blog for some time and I find all your projects and décor very inspiring. Your latest fall tablescape is no exception. I love your mix of natural, organic décor mixed with vintage finds. Have a lovely day.

  28. I love it! I love the hydrangeas, and I adore your little 'bub' asking about eating the pumpkins lol, so cute! We have an eat in kitchen, no dining room. The eating space is large enough to set it up as a dining room, so it works for me. I decorate it like a 'formal' dining room (as formal as you can get with 2 kids, a husband, a dog and a cat) but use it for our every day meals. We also have the kitchen island nearby (like you do!) for the kid's breakfasts, etc. I thought I'd miss a formal dining room when we bought this house, but turns out we don't need it! 30. Very nice! I love the picture facing the door. It has such a nice cozy rustic feel to it. Perfect for a fall dinner. I like when you do a tablescape. It gives us an opportunity to see the sum of your projects and how cohesive the final look is. Be careful though with the tablescaping thing. It is very addictive.

  32. Very Pretty!! I like how you used more non-traditional fall colors. Not just orange, gold, brick, etc. This table looks so homey and inviting. And I also like the use of objects you already had. Just mixed up in a different way. Inspires me to do so as well. Thanks for sharing!
