I want it to look pretty! Two sofas facing each other are perfect for this room and will keep the room open to the kitchen. Add the two chairs facing the fireplace for extra seating. In general I love the idea of two sofas facing each other, but what's on your wall opposite the stairs? We have two windows on that wall and the sofa fits nicely between. The problem is that the windows force the sofa to be in that position, so I can't pull it down closer to the fireplace or it would be oddly situated in front of one window if that makes sense. With the sofa between the windows I can't quite get away with two parallel sofas because then the sofa which would be in front of the stairway would look too far forward, blocking the staircase, like you'd want to shove it closer to the fireplace but then it wouldn't line up with the sister sofa on the other side. I'll see if I can find a photo...
Pam @ bibbidi-bobbidi-beautifulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07665004943835477442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7781670590071996754.post-21223754920835545682017-09-25T10:26:29.275-04:002017-09-25T10:26:29.275-04:00If it wasn't for the tv, I'd say 2 sofas f...If it wasn't for the tv, I'd say 2 sofas facing each other but it would force people to crank their head or lay down. Our last house we had the sofa in the back facing the tv and 2 chairs on either side but it wasn't as big as yours. I like the idea of the sofa in the back with a sofa table and 2 chairs on the lower ceiling side and either a love seat or 2 chairs on the other. That way it's comfortable for tv watching for your family and still works well for company. We have a sectional and another chair in this house in a U shape and it works for us.

It's going to be a beautiful room whichever way you decide to go. Two sofas in an L-shape, with the second sofa on the side with the higher ceiling, and two side chairs on the lower side with a small accent table between them. Large coffee table as an anchor to the arrangement. If you think about it, a U is still a symmetrical arrangement, but balanced out slightly to relate to the room's architecture. I feel like this is what the room's contemporary flow is "asking" for! It will be a beautiful space! I live in Northern California where houses are small and definitely miss the options of living in the Midwest! If you have the room, I would suggest three sofas. You probably think this is crazy, but hear me out… You could face one towards the TV and two across from each other and possibly find another place for the other chairs. I think this would look amazing and almost like a custom sectional. Good luck with everything... can't wait to see how it all turns out! Live with it for a while and see if you are totally annoyed like I am with our perpendicular to the TV! Other possibilities: put TV somewhere else besides over the fireplace. It is nice to have a chair that leans back a little, lets you put your feet up, and lets you fall asleep while watching TV.

Look at all of the beds that are now come with raising your head or feet to allow for better sleeping. I'm curious why you aren't going with built-ins beside the fireplace. The chairs flanking the fireplace would be so cozy for the winter, and you could have a cute ottoman/footstool for one of them. Then you could have your Christmas tree in the corner simply by moving one chair. I've spent way too much time trying to move sofas and loveseats and chairs around, can you tell? To me it's all about the tv-sprawling and making the Xmas tree addition be as low-stress as possible.Annehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10581336761948959857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7781670590071996754.post-31463481310594105812017-09-22T09:49:07.613-04:002017-09-22T09:49:07.613-04:00I had a gathering room with a similar layout and w...I had a gathering room with a similar layout and we LOVED having two couches across from each other ... great converaation and coziness!! This room is screaming for that! One will block it off. If you love to lay on the couch you just take turns. ;) We had a shorter couch in that position to a TV and I would sit at the far end and put a pillow on my lap. My daughter would lay down on my lap. We have also sat like in a boat--does that make sense? It's cozy and can't be done for hours on end but an hour and I was fine. (She was 12 at the time.) I think you can't NOT do the sofas facing and two chairs angled at the far side from the TV. It's actually our less formal living space, but we chose less formal sofas than you have. It's actually perfect for TV watching because my husband and I each lie down on one and it's great! :) We have three kids and they haven't ever fought about who sits where, but our sofas are big and cushy, so that may be partly because of the style. Keep in mind...your sofas don't have to match if you're not able to buy a second one like the first. ;)
I also try to place furniture to encourage interaction versus staring at a TV (unless it's a media room, of course).
