Or you, one-handled faucets that have lime all over them from before we got a softener and I don't heart you because I can only replace you with another one-handled faucet...
Please, just shield your eyes...
You, you silly faucet that's waaaaay too short and I bang pans into you every. day.
And yes, even you, ugly light fixture in our closet. (Yes, I want to replace the light fixture in the place that no one will ever see. I'm a freak, you already know this.)
And you. AGAIN, I REALLY don't heart you.
Or YOU in all your brassiness.
And finally, YOU, in your I-look-like-I-was-installed-in-1988-instead-of-2004 faucet.
Now, I would never say I hate anything in our home. I love our home like a part of our family, really I do. But there are some things I just don't care for. AT ALL. And most of them are things I can't do much about until I hire someone. I have changed out many light fixtures in this house, but the one pictured here is up in the loft, about 15 feet up. Don't you doubt for a second I haven't considered risking life and limb on a 12 foot ladder to change them out. Numerous times. Really. I stand there and think, well, if I have someone stand below in case I fall...
Changing out faucets and knobs are about the only handy thing I haven't done in our home, but I can learn and I know people. So buh bye faucets and knobs...your days are numbered.
The brass fireplace thingys are only magnetized on but Hubby likes them. So I'm going to get an oil rubbed spray paint to redo them. Ugh.
The best part is we built this house and got to pick out every little thing. But when we picked all this stuff out, hubby was all "OH, we need a sound system." And "Oh, we need a security system." And "Oh, let's upgrade our carpet so it costs upteen trillion dollars!!!!" ...I was about to have a heart attack. So when the sales chick said "You really probably want to have us do this, not you." I said, "Are you mad woman?? Give me the cheap brass!!!!" (Never mind that I am thankful every day that we did upgrade those things. I hate when he's right.)
And lest you think, "Well, at least it's all clean!" You so KNOW I wiped this all down before I took the pictures. Ack!!
My house is half and half. The older part has the brass the new part has oil rubbed bronze. My house is very confused. :)
ReplyDeleteHaha, I can sooo relate to this. We just bought our house, and it's about 12 years old, so EVERYTHING is that icky gold and THOSE faucet knobs! Blech. I have already changed out all the door knobs from icky gold to brushed nickel. Now I just need to change out those lovely gold light fixtures...
ReplyDeleteOh if only you could see all the glory my rental has to offer. Can we say fake brick lenolium. Yes, it's true.
ReplyDeleteI think I may tag along on this "i don't heart you" post tomorrow :)
I soooo don't heart my brass fixtures either!!! I also don't heart my brass lighting fixtures on the exterior. We've spent so much blood, sweat and tears(& moolah) on our landscaping so why oh why haven't we not changed those god awful lights???
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting my blog today - you are one hilarious decor chick!! I will certainly have to come back for several visits!! I am very new to blogging - infancy in fact. Thanks for making me laugh out loud. Oh, BTW, can I add my DD to the list of exceptional teenagers that did not go through that god-awful stage that your step-daughter missed out on? Mine is pretty great too.
ReplyDeleteLynette
That is always the case...husbands get the sound system...we get the brass! I think that there will always be something in my house I want to fix. I guess that is the fun of it!
ReplyDeleteI have changed out both faucets and knobs before... so I know YOU can totally handle it! Here are some articles! I should probably think about upgrading my old bathroom too! (3 words for you: SHELL SHAPED SINK... EW.)

HA! We must have the same spa tub!
ReplyDeleteLovely, aren't they :rolling eyes:.
Some ORB spray paint would go a long way w/ the boob light, maybe?
I've seen people take'm and frost the glass and ORB - all w/ spraypaint - and make them more up to date for cheap...kinda...LOL
My niece's room has a double d one...it's a deeper version of one that we picked out because of the canopy bed.
I lucked out though...besides the peach backsplash tile, and faux crystal faucet handles...things were pretty workable in here. Wait...I'm forgetting the completely round white globes that were hanging in the kitchen. I was repressing that memory.
I think you did it right, I mean, the builders have like NO selection on the lighting fixtures and knobs. You get far better selection (and prices) when you do those things yourself, even if you do have to deal with brass for a while :P
ReplyDeleteHome changes are wonderful and all but please do not hurt yourself attempting them.
ReplyDeleteAlso, we're kindred souls or something. Lights in closets drive me crazy too!
Recently found your blog and love it!
ReplyDeleteSadly we have the same fixture as in your loft. Glad you thought about it before climbing up on the 12 foot ladder. I didn't when it came to wanting to paint a niche about 14 feet up. I thought if I could just climb up in it I could kneel on the ledge and paint away. I pulled myself up into from the top of an 8 foot ladder and completely froze with fear. I am sure I was quite the sight as I was lying up there on my belly fretting how to get down. Thank goodness my husband was still down below and willing to help even though I had completely ignored his effort to talk me out of my 'brilliant' idea.
What can I say, I was a girl on a decorating mission, just not a very smart one!
I'm very thankful to have nice fixtures in my apartment. All my other apartments have had really cheap stuff and this one has really nice expensive fixtures.
ReplyDeleteI can't WAIT to see how you spruce all that stuff up....so I can COPY you of course!! (says she with not one creative bone in her body)
ReplyDeleteWe just built our house, and I could go on and on just like you. I still don't have trim or baseboards. Oh and the thing that drives me the most crazy is that on all our doors we have nickel knobs and brass hinges. YUCK!!!! We didn't even think to ask for nickel hinges, and my Husband wasn't about to send the solid cherry doors back. So tell me about the oil rub spray paint!?!
ReplyDeleteI understand your hatred for those things. But, they can be changed and hopefully it won't be too expensive. Just think of all the fun you'll have shopping for new stuff! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI have brass door knobs too! But I'm holding on to 'em. I'm thinking that they'll be the hottest trend in a few years. ;~)
ReplyDeleteI sooo hear you on all those ugly builder brass fixtures!!! We have them too, and I'm slowly changing them out. We finally just did the sinks-yeah!
ReplyDeleteI don't heart my brass door knobs either. Or my builder grade bathroom light fixtures or brass shower surround on my glass shower. I can't wait to replace them. YUCK!
ReplyDeleteI am slowly changing out doorknobs to rubbed bronze, and I already did the light fixtures and the fireplace. Pretty good for only being in my place 18 months!
ReplyDeleteIf this was my list I'd have to add hollow core doors! El Cheapo!
Hey, thanks for coming by today. First off, what you asked about is acutally a little plate with the Boo printed out and adhered to the center. I bought it at a local boutique for only $6...so I didn't want to take my time to make it for that price.
ReplyDeleteHowever, you could do it SO easy. Just take a scrapbook paper with words written on it, use a cool font to print the letters on and then distress it with a brown distress inkpad.
And by the way...your Boo sign was also adorable. Really!!!
Hahahah-- great post. I have a few things in my home I don't heart, either. ;D
ReplyDeleteThis was great! I have brass knobs in my home too. Yuck. Because we are on a tight budget, rather than replace them all, I plan to take them all out and paint them black... until I can afford to get new ones. Just an idea!
ReplyDelete(jilljones43@msn.com)
I had to laugh...welcome to my world girlfriend! The great news is it can be changed to things you love!! hahahahaa You will find things gradually and have a great story for each treasure you find!!
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!!!
Oh multi-colored, like my house...it's add charm and character, dontcha know?
ReplyDeleteThe only suggestion I have, not that you were asking...is to get a one handled deal for the kitchen sink...I can't imagine have a hot and cold faucet in the kitchen...too time consuming, lol. Streamline, streamline.
You know what you could do in the meantime, at least on the brass light fixture...you could paint them white to blend in with the ceiling.
You might be able to use rub and buff on some of the other things...go to Jan's blog today, she posted a website to buy it at...crap, what is the name of her blog...she has a husband named, Tom...does that ring a bell?
Hope you have a wonderful weekend :)
Bella
This makes me laugh, soooo relateable---is that a word? Well you know what I mean. I guess you can work wonders with the oil rubbed bronze spray paint.
ReplyDeleteYou may be able to find two knobs for your one knob faucet. I know we did for ours... Good luck!
ReplyDeleteP.S. I found a place to order the vinyl letters and used your front door idea. The whole family loves it. It is on my latest blog posting
ReplyDeleteHer MB competes at the FBA's and then on to the FMBC's at the Trop. (5th in the AAA div last season) I think maybe 1st moves on into BofA comps...or maybe that's a diff circuit all together. I'm so clueless.
ReplyDeleteAh...a kindred spirit. As you know, I am renovating my 1990ish house too!! Now, I have done the brass fireplace and I have a tip for you. You need to use the heat-resistant spray paint..it is what they use for BBQ's. Otherwise, the paint will peel when you turn on your fireplace.
ReplyDeleteWhen you use that spray paint, make sure that you spray it outide. It is extremely smelly and toxic!!
Also, we sprayed our brass door handles to our outside door. We sprayed it with a brown from the Rustoleum metalic spray paint line. Now, I live in Canada so it can withstand our winter, I am sure that it will withstand yours.
Because we have no money to replace all of the brass doorknobs, I am going to spray them all with this spray paint. It is only a temporary measure until we can afford to replace them but I think they will stand up for a year or two with this spray paint.
Also, we have the same brass fixtures as you and these will definately work with spray paint (i.e., since they aren't being "handled" once they have been reinstalled i.e., vs. a door knob).
Anyhooo...just thought I would share my two cents!
I left an award for you on my blog :o)
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great weekend!
Oh I know what you mean!! We have brass galore!! One every door knob, on the fireplace and on the between the panes of glass on our front door!! I hate it! But I hate the wind blowing in in the winter too:( We have to install our windows first, then a new furnace and then connect to city sewer...so I figure I'll have new hardware like in the year 2020:) LOL
ReplyDeleteMy "favorite" is our wonderful strip of globe lightbulbs with a mirrored background lights in the bathrooms. One is gone, two more to go. And our bathroom we put in the basement never had them because WE put it in! Tee hee. I'm going to have to do a post like this. Sorry for all the comments, this post just really speaks to me and reminds me how much I despise some of the details of builder grade stuff...
ReplyDeleteTHANKS for all the funny comments and great suggestions!! SO glad I'm not alone in this. I'm going to look into painting the knobs, I thought about doing that before. Do you all think it will hold up on the hinges? Also, Kristi, I can't get to your site because it's blocked! E-mail me your web address!
ReplyDeleteI have some of the same exact problems in our new house, I'm excited to see what you do with all of them! Please keep us updated! I'm always looking for cheap ideas!
ReplyDeleteoooh, update us as you change them out. I love little details that make huge impacts!!!!
ReplyDelete♥Jen
I spray painted my brassy door knobs with an outdoor textured black paint and they look great.
ReplyDeleteI have some of these fixtures I want to change out too. I mean, our house was built in 2003 for goodness sakes! They shouldn't be outdated yet! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm exactly where you are - when we built our home, we upgraded things that wouldn't be easy to change later, which left me picking out light fixtures and faucets on the cheap, thinking we'd soon switch them out. Ten years later, very few actually have been.
ReplyDeleteI have these lovely items in my home, too. Is it difficult to change faucets? Could I possibly try it too?
ReplyDelete~Heather
Hi, I tagged you in my blog.. :) Check it out and pass it on!
ReplyDeleteI know we just "met", but I was given the "Kreativ Blogger" award today and would like to present it to you!! If you would like to come over to my place and pick it up, that would be great. You are truly very funny and I love visiting you.
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday -
Lynette
Last summer I found a huge clearance on nickel door knobs and was able to change out the whole house for less than $50.(5 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath) This started my husband on a path to get rid of all the brass down to the brackets that hold up the banister rail. Isn't it funny how something that was a trend 10 years ago is an eyesore to us now?
ReplyDeleteI painted one of our ugly "boobie" light fixtures with a oil rubbed bronze spray paint to match the new bath fixtures, it looks SOOOOO much better & a little less like a boobie.
ReplyDeleteBTW, I heart all your iron work. Just reminds me I need to get out of rennovating mode & start decorating!
When did you sneak into my house to take these photos?
ReplyDeleteWe're trying to change things out a little at a time, but there's not a great way to do that inexpensively, so it's a slow process.
I just found you and I'm loving it. I've already gotten lots of ideas I'm going to try. I too do not love my brass fixtures and they will be changed soon as well. Such henious things, why do they still make them?
ReplyDeleteI laughed so hard I cried. I just told my hubby, I think thrifty decor chick would be my best friend if I met her. She is ME! Hilarious!
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly how our old house was! The new one we just moved to has everything as oil rubbed bronze, except the faucets, (chrome), and all the towel holders/toilet paper holder/hooks in our master bathroom. The were 1980's wood types! And the house is only 2 years old!?! Those got changed as soon as I could figure out how to get them off the wall!(husband transfered to a new duty location... great thing about military, if you hate your house, you get to find a new one in a few years... bad news, if you love it, you'll only have it for a few years!)
