OK peeps, this may be my one and only hair post here at TDC. Well, there is one other tip I found that actually works great on my hair, so maybe there will be two…someday.
Don’t worry, it won’t become a thing. You’ll see from my photos that I’m meant to photograph house stuff, not myself.
Anyway, I actually found this hair trick at Pinstrosity – it’s a fun little site that you must check out! (I like that they don’t tear the original post apart – they often share how it could have been done better to fix the outcome.) The original post was from PaperMama and her hair turns out gorgeous!!
I’ve been wanting to try this out for a while now – usually when I do my Zumba class at night I take a shower after and let my hair just naturally dry. Thing is, it’s a disaster in the morning. And I’m so not taking a shower all over again in the morning -- so it’s a pain.
I thought it would be LOVELY if I could find an easy way to make my hair look presentable the next day, so I decided to finally try this out last night. The great part – you only need a headband, that’s it!
You can visit the PaperMama site for a great video on how to do it – she shows you every step. I let my hair air dry for about 30 minutes and then started -- it actually was much easier than I thought it would be and took no time at all – maybe two minutes for my whole head:
(This is me this morning. These are all awful cell pics cause I was too lazy to get my camera.)
You sleep with it like that overnight. I thought for sure the headband would come off at some point but I woke up with it exactly how I left it.
You can see here how my hair is pulled through and around the headband:
I woke with my hair completely dry and had high hopes.
They were soon dashed. DASHED people. Were there curls? Yeah! Did I look like Shirley Temple? Heck yeah!!:
Um…not what I expected. I’ve been growing out my hair for awhile now, but it’s obviously not nearly long enough for this trick. It worked…it just didn’t work like I wanted.
I expected those loose, flowing curls, but I didn’t get them. ;) I tried to calm my head down by putting my fingers through my hair, a little water, and then even a brush. It helped…a little. But not enough:
There were also random pieces of hair in the back that were just frizzy and looked like I hadn’t done a thing to them, and I know they were wrapped around like the others. Who knows what happened there.
I’ve learned one thing with this little project though – I was considering growing out my bangs and now that’s so not gonna happen. I, uh…need them.
Here’s the thing – if you have long hair this may work great for you. And I am definitely going to try it again as my hair gets longer and I may try wrapping my hair less tightly. It felt pretty loose in there but it was obviously wrapped too tight.
It worked, that’s for sure! Too well?
I ended up just throwing my hair up into a loose pony for the day, and I love how full it is:
This would be a GREAT base for an updo for a fancy occasion – it gives tons of body and fullness to your hair.
So. That’s my experience with this hair trick. Have you tried any you’ve found on Pinterest? Have they worked? (Feel free to share links in the comments if you’ve posted about them. I love reading those!) I did find a way to curl my hair on Pinterest that I LOVE – it just takes forever. Maybe someday I’ll post about that…after a few more DIY projects of course. ;)
Hahaha, I had the exact same results when I tried it! Glad to know I'm not the only one, I don't know how hers turned out so soft & pretty!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry this didn't work out better for you!! But it makes me feel a *teeny* bit better, as I have not found a single curl tutorial yet that has worked for me. I have wavy hair, and it can somewhat hold a curl, but it always falls out soon after. I hope you do another post on your successful curls! :)
ReplyDeleteYou should try the sock bun trick - it doesn't leave you with triangle hair like the headband does.
ReplyDeleteYour loose pony looks great!
ReplyDeleteI guess if I try any of these ideas, I better make sure it's on an 'at home' day.
Chrissy
haha! that's hilarious!! I too tried it and my hair was even shorter...not a good look :) There's a blog called pinterest fails that you need to check out. It's good for some crying laughs!
ReplyDeleteHa! I never do ANYTHING other than pull my hair back in a loose bun, so a month or so ago, I tried the one where you twist sections with your fingers until they curl up to your crown, and then pin them up with bobby pins for "flowing curls". Hahahahahahahahahah. I clearly used TOO MANY sections. I looked like I stuck my finger in a socket. It definitely curled. A lot. I'll try it again with bigger chunks of hair next time.
ReplyDeleteHa - love the "nailed it" photo. I think you have to have really special hair to make those tutorials work - and I most definitely do NOT have special hair.
ReplyDeleteCheck out the "sock bun" curl method. Think your hair would be long enough. My hair is too short but my daughter did it and it was gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteTry a fatter headband. Like a two inch cloth one. Think of the size of the headband in terms of the size of the barrel of a curling iron. If you want big ropey waves, you use a big curling iron. Same goes for this. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI have long hair, and this definitely did not work for me either. I was just as shocked as you to come out with tight frizzy un-tameable "curls"!
ReplyDeletei did this once, too. the first time, i slept on it and i looked like annie in the morning. the second time, i left it in for about 15 minutes, sprayed it, and it was just what i was going for!
ReplyDeleteI was planning to try this...maybe not now! :) I tried the sock bun curls and it did NOT work. I have long, super straight hair and it made me look like I'd been electrocuted.
ReplyDeleteMy hair is about the same length as yours, and I do this all the time. However, mine is layered, so the curls go up to the top. Maybe that's the difference? I don't know. They ARE tight curls, though ... not flowy. :-) Your pony looked great, though!
ReplyDeleteDon't feel bad. I have long, straight hair and I had trouble with this one too.
ReplyDeleteI saw this but never tried it. I don't think it would work on my my hair though because it is so thin and fine. I don't have an ounce of body. Even if I do curlers, it's flat within seconds.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! My friends and I were just talking about this hair trick, and mentioning that we didn't think it would work. My hairs pretty long though, so I think I may give it a try!
ReplyDeletehahah this is so funny Sarah! The same thing happened to me the first time I tried it. I found that if I loosened up the curls around my face when I was putting them in the headband, it makes them look a WHOLE lot more natural :) It does work better on longer hair, though, definitely.
ReplyDeleteAnd honestly, it only works about every other time anyway ;)
I tried the sock bun... my hair is same length as yours. My morning after pic looked exactly like yours doing this method haha. I also threw mine in a pony the next day! I just stick to the hot rollers while I'm getting ready and usually I have SOME curl left at the end of the day! ;) Post more pics of your pretty self! You look skinnier too.. maybe it's Zumba!
ReplyDeleteI saw a youtube video showing how to do this. Her hair was beautiful. But she said your hair has to be dry. So, maybe that was the problem? I've never tried it.
ReplyDeleteI've tried this one too, and mine turned out exactly like yours! Except worse I think. I think you have to have the right texture of hair for this to work. Mine is just too dry and prone to frizz. Oh well it's always fun to try new things!
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking wow, how nice you look with no bangs when wham...you said you'd never grow them out. Its nice if they'd long enough for both options. Truly, you'd pretty with no bangs.
ReplyDeleteVicki ven@horizonsatellite.com
i did the same. i have really long, thick hair and it ended up still damp, frizzy, and a big hot mess!!! i couldnt salvage mine though, had to rewash it that day! lol
ReplyDeleteI tried this method, too! The YouTube video (different from the one you saw) made it look so easy and the woman's hair looked gorgeous! I have really long hair and putting it up wasn't a problem, but the next morning trying to get it all untangled from the headband was nearly impossible! It ended up looking so ratty and I actually had to cut a few bits off the headband because I couldn't get them untangled!
ReplyDeleteI've tried the sock bun, and I think it would work if I used more than one bun (because of the length of my hair just one doesn't really cut it - too thick to really curl). With your length it would probably work really well.
Most of the time I just resort to sponge rollers. I put my hair in a loose pony tail REALLY high on my head so that I can pile the rollers up on top of my head and not have to sleep on them. I dampen each section before I put it in a roller, and by morning it's all dry and the curls hold well. I have stick straight hair and this is what I've found to work best.
I've heard rag curls work, but I had the same issue with my hair tangling as with the headband. Good luck and keep us posted!
Okay, so I have used the same method multiple times. First time worked out great and I thought yea, super easy curls. The. The second time was a mess. I managed to fine tune it and noticed that you need: to let your hair air dry to barely damp before you start twisting into the headband, tend towards smaller sections of hair, and keep the wrapping loose especially towards the front. I tend to wrap 3 or 4 sections then go back to the front and pull it loose a bit. Also don't sleep on it while it is wrapped up. I generally put it up on a morning when I know I will be home and take it out before I Pick up my grade schooler. The 2nd day is e best, looks great and it's about 3 mins to refresh it for the day with product and finger styling. Anyways, that's been my experience.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Vicki - you look great with no bangs! But you look great with bangs, too. So whatever floats your boat - but seriously, if you were going to try and grow them out, do it! You can always chop them off again. And I can't do this look; my hair's too short, too. I've been trying to grow it out but it just-won't-grow. AH. Haha. I think it's this dry AZ heat. It's sucking all the life out of my hair.
ReplyDeleteThe headband curls work, but you can't leave them in overnight or you get your results! :) I mist my already dry hair with water to make it slightly damp and then wrap it around the headband. I leave them in for 1 hour and end up with gorgeous (loose!) curls!
ReplyDeleteI made the mistake of trying the overnight curls the night before our family pictures. Both my daughter and I ended up looking like Medusa in the morning and I had to rewash both our heads! :)
I have done this a few times with varying results. I found that it worked best for my hair with larger sections of hair. Also, the hair has to be 90% dry. The thicker, softer, and more loose the headband the better. I still have not perfected it though. My hair is usually about shoulder length or a few inches longer. There seems to be a few inches of "transition before the nice curls start, so I would think longer hair would work better than short.
ReplyDeleteI also have tried the sock bun method which worked alright, but it was a pain to roll with my thick, long, layered hair. Frankly, my arms just get too tired, I am a wimp :)
I once tried the pinned-up curls method. that was just ridiculous for my thick hair. It took a long time to get it all up and didn't end up in soft curls.
I would love to here your other method as well!
I've seen a couple of "no heat curl" tutorials! Same say twist your hair and then loop it around the elastic, others just say loop sections around. I've only tried the loop ones... but I never leave it long enough. Seems to work though!! However, I have dead straight hair (that ordinarily really does NOT like to curl!) Different strokes for different folks, but I think yours turned out great after a little relaxing! :)
ReplyDeleteteapotsandtrinkets.blogspot.com
You are too funny! I think the curls look cute! I have my eye on one Pinterest hair item: beach waves where you twist the sections and then go over them with a hot flat iron. I'm dying to try it but I'm very lazy. =)
ReplyDeleteJeanine
This is too funny! I have long hair and find it easier just to spend 5-10 minutes in the morning with a curling iron. It gets the kinks out and gives it fullness with just a tad bit of curl.
ReplyDeleteI tried this too - except my hair is LOONG and by the time I got ALL of it wrapped, it had gotten so tangled at the ends I had to cut out my headband AND some of my hair! The curls looked good though!
ReplyDeleteI have tried the headband curls and it usually works for me. It is definitely a trial and error process though. Barely damp works best for me. I like that the curls hold for a long time. My hair is long and thick so most curls don't stay.
ReplyDeleteI also tried the braid and go over it with a flat iron. That didn't work at all. Not one bit of wave or curl in it.
I now own a deep waver iron and it is ok. It works but looks more like a large crimp iron than fun beach waves.
I'll have to look into the sock bun idea... anything to not have the hair we are dealt, right? LOL!
Give the sock bun a try. My daughter sleeps in it with slightly damp hair, and it looks great. There are some videos on YouTube that show you just what to do.
ReplyDeleteI tried it, too...but got nowhere near as far as you did! I was that baby who wouldn't sleep in any position except on my back. Therefore, the back of my big ol' head is f-l-a-t...I can't even get an elastic headband to stay on my head, ha ha!!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a plan but reading the comments, sounds like a plan gone wrong. My hair is curly so won't even attempt. BUT, I do love Pinterest anyway!
ReplyDeleteHaha you crack me up! The updo looks great though! : )

I loved this post !!!!!!!! Cute hair for you either way girl .. Dont let anyone tell you any different... I wouldnt be scared to stand beside ya lol .. LOVED this ..Really cute and made my day .. HUGS and blessings for a wonderful week .................
ReplyDeleteI looked the same when I tried them! I found the trick is to wear it in the headband when your hair is damp then let it dry for a couple hours not over night. I blogged my method here: easy curls for the hair challenged
ReplyDeletewww.nicole-blissfullyblessed.blogspot.com
You are so darned pretty! Seriously, do you use a lash enhancer or are your lashes just happy to see me?
ReplyDeletePardon the pun :)
Awesome post! I looked just like that the first time I tried this method too. But I was determined to have an easy (read: lazy lol) go-to hair method and now it's almost all I do! I have medium length wavy/frizzy hair. For me it only works when my hair is basically bone dry and in thick, thick sections...otherwise I end up poodling lol. The process isn't the most attractive - my husband calls me "the little boy" when I set my hair up and we have a good laugh together, but the results are worth it...don't give up on it yet...good luck!
ReplyDeleteI want to try this too! My hair is about the same length as yours so it might be too soon. We'll see. I need a new headband first.
ReplyDeleteI've been (just in the last few days) doing some of the things I've pinned. some more successful than others. I have several days ready to post. I have 2 more things to do tomorrow that I'm going to do. We'll see how they work out.
I love your blog! I have you in my Reader and you inspire me!
I love when you post about you! Keep it coming! You have awesome projects (which I so enjoy reading about), but just know we don't think you're a project machine!
ReplyDeleteThis soooo would have happened to my hair. Have you seen the one where you twist your hair up and sleep on it and let it dry? It's suppposed to be all lovely and beachy waves. . . train wreck. For me, at least. :)
I used to have curly hair (before I got pregnant), and brushing curls is never good. I think the key might be product. Maybe if you found the right product it wouldn't be too curly or frizzy. That's great that your hair curls so well though. Mine doesn't curl all that well anymore. I think hair tutorials are hard because it depends on the texture and length and thickness of your hair for how it turns out.
ReplyDeleteYep - tried it.......one time......it was actually OK, I keep telling myself I need to try it again. I think it takes a while to really figure out how to make it look right for your own hair length and style....FOR SURE the blog post I saw it on had it down perfectly - she looked like a fashion hair model - I looked like I was trying WAYYYY too hard! Fun Post anyway :-)
ReplyDeleteYou MUST try the sock bun roll. Here is a step by step. http://www.beautylish.com/a/vcvzi/how-to-sock-bun. Do this right before going to bed. Hair can be damp but not soaking. I like how mine turns out, it just doesn't hold for me because I have paper straight hair. I love the sock bun roll to pull my hair up during the day too!
ReplyDeleteDeDe@DesignedDecor
Mine turned out great. Try it again but take larger sections at a time. Your pieces may have been to small. Also, start farther forward on your hair. Push the front if your hair down under the headband too.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Pinstrosity totally keeps things classy. Reminds me of Regretsy (www.regretsy.com). However, they keep things 'klassy'.
ReplyDelete{You look great, by the way :)}
Carol
You are so brave! I love it.
ReplyDeleteI have naturally curly hair and if I don't put any product in my hair, it looks exactly like your "fail" results. You might try again and when you style it, put some gel in to control the frizzies...use your hands like paddles (not your fingers) and swipe some gel through and scrunch. And never ever use a brush (the kiss of death for curls!) in fact, the less you mess with curls, the better they are. I don't see this as a fail, only as a project halfway done! :-)
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about the bangs. My forehead is shaped just like yours and I have had bangs since 5th grade:)
ReplyDeleteI wonder if because your hair is naturally curly it wouldn't work. Mine is curly and I can just picture a big frizz mess.
ReplyDeleteI tried it, and it did work--I had nice big curls...but they fell out of my hair way faster than they would have if I'd just used a curling iron. My hair is pretty long, so I don't know if its own weight pulled it down or what! Everyone keeps mentioning the sock bun, so maybe I'll try that?
ReplyDeleteThat is so funny Sarah! Nailed it! (I hate to admit that it worked for me... maybe it is a hair texture thing?) Love the post though!
ReplyDeleteKeep trying, Sarah - I think your hair looked cute!
ReplyDeleteWhat Mindy is talking about up there is called Pincurls - where you curl up small sections of wet hair and use bobby pins to pin the sections to your head, then let your hair dry that way (usually overnight). This really only works for short hair, though. My mother used to style my hair this way when I was a kid because curlers wouldn't stay in my straight hair. She would put styling gel (Dippity Doo)on my wet hair first, then curl it up and pin it, and make me sleep on it that way the night before picture day at school. It was horribly uncomfortable!
Thank heavens someone invented the curling iron!
I braid mine post-shower and sleep like that. Wake up to gorgeous curls the next day. I also use a shampoo and conditioner called totally twisted...I think it 's made by Herbal Essence. MUCH more reliable results!
ReplyDeleteIve got super fine but super thick straight hair and ive found for me rag curlers works great. Just do less curls with bigger sections of hair. Might try this way to see if it works.
ReplyDeleteI tried this last night and it worked great! Unfortunately, I then slept on the curls, which made a mess. But, I know better for next time. lol
ReplyDeleteI put product in my hair before I started so that I wouldn't have any frizz and then I wrapped big sections loosely around the headband. I left it like that for a couple of hours and it turned out so awesome!
Hi,
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, you have nice hair.
We are having our first link party and would like to invite you to link up.
Thanks!

After multiple pinterest hair fails, this one actually worked for me but I have long, thick, naturally curly hair. My hair just doesn't naturally curl pretty so this really helped shape the curls in the right direction...and it definitely still needed product to keep it in place. Your pony is super cute though! Maybe this is just a starting point to something else?
ReplyDeleteDana {happylittlelovelies.com}
I did the sock bun curls trick. It turned out a lot like yours. The curls were either too tight, and sometimes frizzy, and they didn't lay right at all! Oh well - at least we tried!
ReplyDeleteThis did not work for me, but it works swimmingly for my daughter! She wakes up to beautiful non-frizzy curls. Makes me crazy. Maybe it is a texture thing?? Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteOH man. Sometimes this happens with my hair. Usually it's because my hair is too wet when I put it up. Might take a bit of practice?
ReplyDeleteBUT, the extra volume is fantastic.
Maybe try it with your hair less damp/drier and wrap bigger sections. I've had some good results with this method, but my hair is much longer. Or I agree with the other ladies - try a sock bun.
ReplyDelete
