If the doorbell wasn't answered, and there was no other sign that someone was at home, they would go around to the back door and break into the home. They were using kids for this, by the way, since they knew the kids would get a lighter punishment if caught.

We have a sign by our front steps advertising the alarm that is always on when I'm home alone, and we nearly always have a pickup truck in the driveway, so I don't worry about break-ins too much. I have not only full sidelights with a transom window above, but also a full window (that someone could walk up to) on my wraparound porch, and my family think I'm crazy, but I also am creeped out by the thought of being observed without my knowledge, so I covered the sidelights and window with simulated cut-glass window film that looks very realistic. It's only a static-cling film, so it can be removed at any time and reused if I like. When someone comes to the door, I usually go to the second floor, where a small balcony overlooks the foyer. I can see through the transom window that is still clear, and, most of the time, whoever is at the door doesn't know I'm there, because they don't look up through that window.

Being cautious even when someone is expected is a good idea. I made a mistake once in opening the door too quickly, since I had called the city about an issue and was expecting one of their employees. A guy with some sort of ID tag/badge came to the door, so I opened it and invited him to come in before realizing that he was a salesperson. Fortunately my dog began to growl and bark, coming toward us, so I suggested that we go out to the porch, where I very firmly told him that I didn't wish to buy anything and refused his request for my name, lest he claim that I had ordered something or engage in the well-known practice of referring to me by name in claiming to my neighbors that I was a satisfied customer.

At a neighborhood watch meeting in our last location, in a major metro, we were told that even solicitors who had legitimate licenses from the city would push their way into houses uninvited once someone had answered the door, so not answering it while still making noise is probably a good idea.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7781670590071996754.post-72461741957736502902014-06-29T10:46:22.186-04:002014-06-29T10:46:22.186-04:00Try covering your door with blinds. We might have a 100 year old door (possibly getting new 100+ year old house) I'm going to want to make into half glass. Hubby is amazingly handy and I have a great glass guy so I'm pretty sure it can be done. Of course I also want him to make it a dutch door. Our police department strongly encourages you to yell through the door "Who is it?" or "honey (even if honey isn't home) I'll get the door" to let the knockers know someone is there. Don't be afraid to be rude.
If you do not open the door, they will assume you are not home and will break in to what they think is a simple burglary. The surprise is not good for either party. My side door faces one end of their house. They're nice people, but rather nosy. My hub and I want to purchase a new side door. I currently have the door with 9 window panes with curtains for privacy. The sun fades the curtains and attractive curtains are not so cheap, unless you can make your own. But why bother, since the curtains become faded anyway. I was thinking of getting a door with the oval leaded glass window, but the smaller one. I have a size 32 door and the highest privacy window I can get with brass caming, is an 8. My neighbor's window is directly across from my back door, so I know they'll snoop. I really want this style door, but I've also considered the door with the window high above. My concern with that particular style is that I won't be able to see out of the door at all. Hmmm, decisions. After reading the comments here, I'll have to think about this some more.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7781670590071996754.post-9471745110142828802012-09-17T18:48:34.359-04:002012-09-17T18:48:34.359-04:00Hubby and I are tackling this project now. I'm a former ninja myself. Especially since the house I grew up in had a full glass door. HOWEVER, a police officer said the best thing you can actually do is let whoever is at the door see you!! Solicitors will know you are not interested. The actual 'bad guys' will know you are home and will move on to another house to burgle. The only reason they knock on the door in the first place is to determine if the house is empty. I'm a natural light fanatic, so I opted for a half glass door and had a local company do a custom sand blasted design. It has a swirly pattern with our initial inside and our door number etched in the bottom. I LOVE it. Most of the glass is sand blasted so I don't feel like anyone can see in unless they are literally nose to the glass. Oh, and the way the pattern dances on the wall each afternoon is nothing short of magical. Oodelolly!! So my vote is go with the glass! Have it etched or sand blasted for more individuality and privacy and then bask in the light!Shane's Angiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13492090398571138154noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7781670590071996754.post-22072321034026772532012-05-06T15:05:30.241-04:002012-05-06T15:05:30.241-04:00I sure have enjoyed your blog since I stumbled upo...I sure have enjoyed your blog since I stumbled upon it recently! When we bought a house with side light windows, I scoured the internet for solutions to the privacy issue. Some folks on our street have faux wood blinds on them, which would kind of work, but custom blinds would have been a $200 solution. So I gave it a lot of thought - what else is long and skinny that I might convert into a window covering even though I have no sewing skills? I know! - a table runner! So after a lot of research and thought, I stumbled upon a great solution at Wal Mart of all places! I know, when does the internet fail and Wal Mart come through? Like, never! I got bamboo table runners for $8 each at Wal Mart. (And I just hung them with 1 nail in the middle.) They are the perfect length. They are sheer enough for light to come through and for me to see outside, but from the outside looking in, during the day you can see nothing but blinds. At night you can make out shapes more, but if I turn on the outside light, there is enough of a glare, that it's pretty private. I like the textured look of the blinds, too. So maybe if you got a window in your door, you could use bamboo blinds for some privacy!C. Most break ins occur from the backyard as this area is not exposed to constant traffic/neighbors, people walking, etc. As far as people coming up to your door, just say no thank through the door.
