It had a flowery design on it and I painted right over it. It took a lot of coats for mine too. And honestly, one side of it still isn't covered completely. I just turn that side to the back. I HAD to get rid of it! On a whim, I tried some nail polish remover... and WAAAAHHHH LAAAAAA! The paint came right off! Might be worth a try on something like this, even if you are going to spray paint it, it might not take as many coats of paint to cover up the flowers.
