How to Make a DIY Christmas Ornament Wreath

November 22, 2009

How to make your own DIY ornament wreath for less!

All you need for this Christmas wreath DIY decoration is a container of shatterproof ornaments and a wire hanger or two!

These DIY wreaths are so easily customized to your holiday decor -- you can make them in any color and size. I'll share the full tutorial and my tips here!

One of my lovely readers suggested a project like this when I shared my glam Christmas dining table decor recently.

I found a huge container of 50 bronze Christmas ornaments at Hobby Lobby for only $10, and ended up making two wreaths from this container: brown shatterproof ornaments

If you follow two simple pieces of advice this will be the easiest Christmas craft you’ll do this year…listen to me carefully…I’m about to save you some major frustration.  :)

1. Before you start your wreath

This tip will save you SO much time and frustration! Before you start, use a hot glue gun to secure the little tops onto the ornaments!

Oh yes, you may tug at the little tops and think they're on there just fine, but you would be wrong. 😂

If you want a full and pretty ornament wreath, you'll want to be able to add a lot of balls to your wreath, so they start to push against each other and add some pressure.

2. Create your wreath form

I used a wire hanger for my wreath frame. It may be helpful to grab some pliers so you can unwrap the wire and make it into a circular shape:
 wire hanger for wreath

After doing this project a few times, I highly recommend using thin wire that is easily manipulated. These dry cleaner hangers are much stronger than you'd think!

You want your wire to be strong enough to keep the wreath shape, but not so thick you can't move it around.
If you don't want to use the entire length of the hanger for your wreath, you'll need some kind of wire cutter to cut it down, but I recommend waiting till you've started before cutting the wire.

3. Add your ornaments!

After your wire is spread out, this is the easy part! Just thread the plastic tops on the ornaments through the wire.

If you're using different colors, I recommend staggering them as you go:
DIY wire ornament wreath

Then arrange the ornaments so the wire is hidden as much as possible. If you use plenty of bulbs, you won't see much wire at all.

If you do see some of the hanger, or want to fill in more of the space, you can tuck in some bows, jingle bells, tinsel garland or greenery inside those spots to make it fuller.

When finished, twist the two ends of the wires together by hand or with pliers and tuck them behind the wreath.

If you use maluable wire and glue your ornament tops, this is a very easy project! The end result is a really beautiful Christmas wreath, customized to your decor!:
DIY ornament wreath

My container of bulbs (shatterproof) had 50 in it, and I used a few from my Goodwill stash as well.
The final wreaths had approximately 30-something ornaments per wreath. They are small but that’s what I wanted.

I would suggest counting out your ornaments if you plan to make more than one!

I hung them from cream ribbon in the two molding rectangles that flank our windows in the dining room:

I just looped the ribbon into the wire frame from behind. These would also be lovely with a loose ribbon hanging from the bottom of the wreath.

Here are a few more tips for these DIY Christmas ornament wreaths:
  • Vary the colors for a more festive look, or use similar ones for a modern, monochromatic design. You can match your Christmas tree colors as well!
  • Twist a couple wire hangers together to create a bigger wreath.
  • I like to use different sizes of ornaments for some interest.
  • Plastic ornaments are best for this DIY project -- I suggest checking out the Dollar Tree selection!

I love this simple but elegant wreath idea! So many fun possibilities!:

My total cost for the two wreaths was $10 for the ornaments. Fantastic! You can't find these for that price anywhere.

  3. so adorable and great colors! I got christmas stuff out this weekend! you'll have to check it out on my blog. Mantel is done and trees are going up!!!

  4. I made a red/green/gold one for my mom this weekends and while I did heed the advice of hot gluing first (and getting several fingertip burns!) I did not have any cheapy wire hangars and wrestled with the ends for.ev.er. Seriously. I even got out pliers to try to twist them. I ended up just flipping the ends back over and hotglue-ing the last ornament so it couldn't slip off. Oh well. This is fantastic and reminds me of some wreaths I saw at the Hyatt in Chicago during midwest last year.

  5. I'm so glad I found you because this is wonderful and I can hardly wait to get started. I have a bunch of old ornaments we don't use anymore because I changed my *theme*, so this would be perfect for hanging on the front door or the kitchen door inside. The best part is that I don't even have to leave the house to make this. I have everything I need right here.

Apparently, I've been under a rock. I'd not ever seen this! So, thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Oh, that's great! I never knew to thread them on wires! Fabulous, I always wanted one of these, but didn't know exactly how to make it... so, THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU!

  7. I agree with you! I have been working on this type of wreath for two days. I need to A. go find a thinner, flimsy-er wire hanger and undo all of my ornaments and B. hot glue the tips as the E-6000 adhesive didn't work as a "faster" way. They still popped off. UGH!

So, thank you for giving the warnings, er, advice! It will save all of us lots of frustration!

  8. those colors are so pretty! i love how the bronze looks against your dining room walls.
who knew it was that easy to make such a cute wreath?
    thanks for sharing.

  9. I did this today listening to Christmas music, totally got me in the mood for decorating. I spent $10 at the Dollar Store for ornaments and one spool of ribbon. I used 64 ornaments in all, large and small. The wreath is silver and blue and the ribbon is white with silver...love it!

  10. Oh I am SOO glad you posted this just now. I am planning in the next day or two to do my wreath and had the thought that I wouldn't worry about the hot glue. Bad me!!!

I'll take your advice and hunt down that hot glue gun that seems to have disappeared in the move. (I have a sinking feeling I may have thrown it out).

  11. So cute and lovely! Great colors.

  12. BEAUTIFUL wreath you made!!!! I was soooo happy to see you post this because I just made one for my daughters playroom, and I found it to be so easy until I got to the end where I had to close the wire together, I as one of your other readers had to literally pull out my wire cutters and and twist those crazy jokers together after about 15 minutes of trying... And now I realize it had to be the hanger being too thick in size... Well I guarantee you, I will be on the search for the thinest I can find, because I want to make many more of these cuties in the next few days... Thanks sooooo much for the helpful advice!!!!!

  14. I am laughing so hard....not sure why....I think it's because every time I decide to try a "diy"....this kind of poopy stuff happens and I get so flipping frustrated that it was SUPPOSED to be easy peasy and it turns into a marathon of all marathon's! Glad to see that everyone else gets into these little projects and sometimes finds them feeeeeeerustrating! lol

  29. Oh I just love those browns and coppers together. My husband thinks we have too much brown in our living room, but I think he's wrong and I think I NEED to make myself some. Thanks for the tutorial!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I just did one of these and you are soooooo right about the hot gluing. And the clothes hanger! Who knew those stupid things were so hard to twist?
The browns and coppers are lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I had planned to do a ribbon wrapped and felt wreath, but now I want one of these.

Hmm, I could do one for our bedroom - where the tree will be, and one for the living room!

  32. I am headin over to the Habitat resale store this morning and pick up some bulbs because I am now inspired to do this project. Thanks for the good tips.
Your wreaths are lovely and so is your diningroom.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wow, I wish I had this post to read before I tried this project a couple weeks ago! I didn't pre-glue the tops on (until they fell off the wreath) and I used a "nice sturdy hanger" that was impossible to close at the end! I may have to do my wreath over, right this time. Yippee! Thanks for making me feel less like a dork anyway!

    ReplyDelete
  34. The mantra of pre-gluing the tops has been going through my head. I still have this on my list of things to put together. Yours look fabulous in your dining room!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I am running to the store this morning! I tried a whole different version and only ended up with broken ornaments and dreams. Thanks for the easy but beautiful wreath...Great Gift Idea!!!

  43. Those are beautiful!!! I need to learn to how to have patience in order to be crafty.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I made 3 of these this weekend as well and YES the hot glue is a necessity and I swear I still lost a few that I had to glue back in!

    ReplyDelete
  45. So glad someone else had that problem besides me! I used a thick wire hanger and boy do I regret it. I nearly broke the ornaments while trying to twist the wires together at the end.

I got it looking just right and only had to add my ribbon and then...today I dropped the wreath and it broke into more pieces than I'd like to say....

Lord help me this is some Monday already!

    ReplyDelete
  46. LOOOOOOOOVE this wreath!!!! I makes me all giddy & giggly inside! :-) This one is a must try for me now, I've seen it a few times too. Beautiful!!!

  47. If one more person beat me to "finishing" this wreath!!

    Looking good Sarah!

    ReplyDelete
  48. First of all I love your live writer posts! SO jealous that there is not a MAC version.
I have been wanting to attempt this SO much but after working on a nut wreath for fall i thought it would be easier to buy one! I had no idea you threaded them on! I thought it was all hot glue! ha so thanks for the great tips and pics.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I love those, will definitely follow your advice!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Beautimous!! :) How lucky were you to find ornaments in just the colors you needed? I'm tellin' you, that Hobby Lobby is amazing. I don't know why they won't bring one to my area of Virginia!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I've seen this wreath everywhere, but I LOVE the colors that you used!!! I was going to wait until next year to do this, but I may have to find a place for it this year. :)

    ReplyDelete
  55. Love it! Am definitely going to make one, or two, or three!!! LOL My daughter just bought her 1st Christmas tree for her apartment, she chose purple and silver ornaments...I would love to make one for her to match. Oh, and as for the nails...I use white thumb tacks, they hold just as well and don't show. Or, you could make pretty bows and slip them onto the nails.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I LOVE it! Truly I do. This is going on the To Do List (along with buying more hot glue sticks. I like learning vicariously).

    ReplyDelete
  57. Sarah you are so awesome! Thanks for another great project! Really it is so cool!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Hahah you are hilarious. Thanks for the tutorial! I saw wreaths like these at Home Goods...I was about to hot glue the actual ornament to a wreath. Ummm that would have been disasterous! Now I will search for hanger wire! :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Sarah, you're so funny! I had to go back & find my old post, since I didn't do a good job of showing how it was done, I just linked to Eddie's post. But, here's mine from last year:
    http://southernhospitalityblog.com/can-you-love-a-vacuum-cleaner/

Don't let the title fool you! yours turned out great, I love the bronze tones. I think I need to take mine apart & glue those tips, you're right, they can explode & fall off. I've lost a couple of mine already. I have to figure out where I'm gonna hang mine!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I have been drooling over these wreaths for weeks. Yours is my favorite yet...LOVE how elegant it looks! Thanks for sharing!

I think you should make one for each of the back of the chairs in the Dining Room! ha!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I'm checking your blog with my almost 3yr old on my lap and right when the pic of the wreath came on the screen he gasped and said, "Oh that's bootiful! Where'd you make that Mommy." I had to let him know it wasn't my creation. Hopefully it soon will be though. It's gorgeous!

    ReplyDelete
  64. So I attempted this a couple weeks ago following Eddie Ross. But I didn't LISTEN!! I gave the ornaments a gentle tug and didn't think I needed to hot glue. Total disaster! It is still sitting there with half the bulbs off waiting for me to pull out the hot glue gun to actually do it properly. Major BUMMER!! So ladies, listen up USE HOT GLUE GUN!! Your wreaths turned out beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I just made one this weekend...and I didn't have enough ornaments. I used all my thrifty ones...so I'm just going to cut my wire shorter...thanks for the advice!!! And, I can't tell you how many burnt fingers I had from glueing the tops on...ugh!

Beautiful. (That's what I get for not checking this blog before I leave the house!)

    ReplyDelete
  71. LOVE the wreaths - they do look stunning!!

I bought 2 consultations from you a while back and I do keep meaning to send you after pictures... only the afters haven't quite gotten there yet!! We are SOOOOO close to having our formal living room finished - well, finished without furniture. It'll be furnished slowly, but all the details are coming together.

I blogged about it here - http://paulsbride.blogspot.com/2009/11/little-details.html - but there's really only pictures of our floor vents that MATCH our hardwood floors. It was so exciting to find vents that match so perfectly!!! I will let you know when I post pictures of the whole room - your idea for the curtains looks stunning in the room!!

  72. These really are gorgeous. Well done!

And I promise that if I give them a try, I will TOTALLY glue them. I swear.

  75. I've seen these all over blog land also, and have wanted to try one. Thanks for the tips about hot glue and thin wire!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I made mine this weekend. I used the exact same ornaments from Hobby Lobby. I am with you on gluing the tops on. I tried to pull one off and thought, "oh, these won't come off." I was wrong. People, listen to her! I had to unstring mine and glue the tops on. But be careful about how much glue you use. It only takes a little. I used too much on some of mine and stopped up the hole! I had to use knives, tweazers, and a straight pin to unclog the holes!

    ReplyDelete
  77. your photos look like something out of a magazine. . love the last one with both wreaths showing and the chandelier. . very elegant and wow! I am thinking. . I may have to make one too :) When I do, I will be sure to send you a pic :) Thanks for a lovely blog

Thank you so much for posting. I saw on TV tonight one of the major magazines has a feature this month about how to make one of these as well (I think they've been trolling round blogland looking for ideas....)

  91. Oh! Thanks for the tips. I might (probably won't until next year, who am I kidding) give this a shot!

  95. I made one of these this year and thought I must be crazy because I had seen this on several blogs and NO ONE mentioned how IMPOSSIBLE it is to twist the hanger closed. After a lot of frustration and a little bit of SCREAMING in annoyance, I finally twisted it "a little bit" and covered it with ribbon to try to hide it.

  96. Love the wreath and the colors you chose! It looks like a project even I could do!

  101. So I showed my mom a tutorial somewhere saturday morning and said I wanted to give this a try! She didn't even go a day without beating me to it...she does this all the time! (Not sure why I still show her ideas before I get it done!) Anyhow...she glued the tops right away, knowing what would happen if not. And it turned out pefect...gag! :) Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Ok confession time. I read Chris' post and she made it look so easy and fab so I totally tried this! And I got really great ornaments and I was so excited...but then...I didn't hot glue the tops. I really thought, they are going to hold fine. NO THEY WILL NOT MY FRIEND! After dealing with this 15 minute project for about an hour I took all the ornaments off and threw the hanger away!

Maybe I should try again and hot glue like I am supposed to. What do you think? :)

    ReplyDelete
  103. Simply Gorgeous!! I am disappointed though...my Hob Lob is all SOLD OUT of the beautiful bronze. My kiddos and I are going to make a few...wonderful teachers gifts! Thanks for the ideas!

  114. Thanks for this - it is truly a-ma-zing! I am going to try this out ASAP, I've got a giant pack of various shades and assortment of purple baubles I couldn't decide what to do with this year. Now I'm settled in this idea.

Your works so well in your house - perfect!

  115. Yes I will have to agree. This looks stunning. I have seen the wreath all over as well and have been deliberating whether or not I want to do one myself. I just might now. Looks beautiful!

  116. I love the idea of this...also because I was just at a little christmas store and they had packages of plastic christmas balls that look real. I think I must make this with those!!

  117. I LOVE this wreath!!!! I love it so much, I will actually do it. I am thinking of just buying some fishing wire so it is not so hard to twist at the end? Hmmm... It might not stay twisted, so I would use, like hot glue. Would it be too flimsy? Are these questions too specific? Should I be emailing you right now? Probably! Thank you for doing it again, making me feel like I can be crafty, that is ;).

  118. I am SO doing this next year. No decorations at my house this year as we have just moved across the country. I have been seeing this around for a while and even bought balls to do it but never got around to it. Yours looks beautiful. You crack me up about the Live writer and adding your words:)

  120. OK, I tried the hangar, but call me blond, I couldn't get the ornaments to lay flat!

So, I made an all red version, over a 10" foam wreath.

Thanks for the tutorial, and the great pictures- check mine out if you get a chance:

  121. I love your wreaths...I saw the one from Eddie Ross and Tried to make one today. I had the same problem as you did with the crazy tough wire! I love the brown ornaments!

  122. Easy Peasy. Will post pictures as soon as I hang the wreath.

  123. Thank you for your instructions! Especially the hot glue tip. I made a wreath and posted about it (if you would like to see it today), and also mentioned the hot glue (my wreath is the Pottery Barn look alike). I am so glad to have used that step!
    Have a great day!

  125. Thanks for all the great details about how to make the wreath without too much frustration. I made it tonight and although I need to change the way I tied the ribbon, I really like how it turned out. I posted a photo on my blog, http://nicoleandtim.blogspot.com, if you want to check it out.

Thanks for all the directions... You were totally right about the hot glue! You rock!

  127. I cannot for the life of me twist the wire shut at the end. And I really did find the cheapest hanger possible :-(

  128. Stunning. I bought those same ornaments and filled in the dinning room tree. I might make some of these for the sitting room.

  129. Yours came out great I came via Rhoda...I am going to be on the lookout for some pretty ornaments and will try this for next year...

    Merry Christmas,

  130. I cheated and left the hanger closed and just hot glued each ornament to either the wire or the other ornaments. I think it turned out quite well! I just pulled all of the tops off of the bulbs. Then I also glued in the occasional tiny jingle bell and plastic candy ornament.

  131. Love it! I finally made one last week, and I'm happy with how it turned out. Though for the life of me I was not able to cover the hook with a ribbon and have it look right! Help! I posted pictures on my blog http://newshadeofgreen.blogspot.com/.

I avoided burns by using pliers to hold the ornament top while applying hot glue. After reading comments and other blogs, I'm thankful to have had a burn free experience!

  135. OK...so I tried this last year and got frustrated. I realize now that my hanger is too thick. It looks almost footballish. I want to salvage it. How did you get your wreath so small? Is it just where you closed it up?

  136. I've now made 4 of these. One from some very old ornaments that belonged to my husband's grandmother. That wreath will go to my husband's mother. I like them best using ornaments with a wide assortment of sizes and textures.

  137. Um...we looked at one of these at Pier One last weekend for $60....and didn't buy it. I kept thinking there had to be a way to make one. Fate brought me to you...on to the dollar store today!

I like the color combination you chose, it is perfect for your home.

Thanks for sharing the tips and ways to make it easier.

  141. I attempted to make one of these the other day using some thick floral wire from the dollar store. Let me tell you that you definitely need to use a wire hanger the floral wire didn't hold a round shape so I ended up using it as a swag on my fire place. Still cute as a swag though! Thanks!
