August month in review!

Well hello there! First of all, I need to announce the winner of the Stella and Dot giveaway (I have been bad at this lately!) – the (randomly drawn) lucky winner is Kelsy from We Weren’t Crazy! Congrats Kelsy! Please email me and I’ll get you in touch with Jennifer.

Okie dokie, onto the review of August and the fun stuff that went on around TDC!

At the beginning of the month, I showed you the series of desks that have graced our office, including a DIY desk gone wrong, wrong, wrong. :)

The heavens opened up when I found this farmhouse table through a friend, and it was only $15!:

It was exactly what I was looking for! It was a mess though – more on that later. :)

At the August Before and After Party, I shared how I turned an 80’s clock from Goodwill into a purdy little cloche:

Not bad for four bucks baby!

I shared my debt story and how this guy has inspired us to change our lives:

That was a VERY exciting day – Dave Ramsey’s peeps linked to my post on their Twitter and Facebook pages!! It was a THRILL and an honor. :)

We have since started Financial Peace University and are more motivated than ever to get rid of our debt! As of today I OWN my car outright – we paid it off!! And tomorrow we are paying another credit card. We are so close but yet still so far away…but we will get there and live like no one else!!

I was thrilled to announce my partnership with True Value hardware stores:

I am in great company in the blog squad!! Check out the post for a list of other DIY blogs involved.

I had two fabulous giveaways this month, and the first was from

You have to check out the deals every day over at Wuslu! Such a fun idea.

I finally (FINALLY!) finished the staircase project that I started months ago. I used mdf to add some detail to the staircase wall and love it!:

I finally found a good before picture, by the way, from my Houzz interview a year ago:

thriftydecorchick traditional staircase
Lurve, lurve, LURVE. Sigh.
I showed you my transition from white faux wood blinds to bamboo shades throughout our house:

It’s taken a few years, but I’m pretty much done getting the bamboo up! There are pros and cons to the roman shades, but I love them!

I am seriously obsessed with the fall season, and this year was the first I really, truly enjoyed summer:

It was the first summer I was a 100 percent stay at home momma, and I have a feeling that had a lot to do with why I fell in love with it this year.  ;)

Thanks to True Value, I was able to change out some knobs on a couple pieces of furniture, and I showed you the difference they made:

I just love those glass knobs – so much better than the black knobs that came with the buffet!

Towards the end of the month I shared our warm and cozy family room:

I decorated it with the colors of fall and it works OH so well. :)

I swooned, you swooned, we all swooned for the Stella and Dot giveaway:

Congrats again to Kelsy for winning!

It took some help, but I finally got my farmhouse table turned into a desk:

It was covered with lead paint, so I left the paint removal to the professionals. I have to tell you – I LOVE THIS DESK. It is so huge and the absolute perfect height. You can tell I’m already right at home:

;) You can see a sneak peek of the parson’s chair cover I grabbed for $15 at Cost Plus World Market! Love the color – but I’m going to have to make some adjustments to it.

Many of you asked the color on the walls – it’s called Fired Brick from Sherwin Williams. It is a lovely color – but I’m hoping to get the new paint up next week! :)

I am feeling the itch for fall decor, so we all drooled over the latest Pottery Barn catalog:

And I held an impromptu fall linky party – check out over 100 inspirational links to get you in the mood for fall decorating!

Finally, we lost my dear father-in-law last week, and I celebrated his life and legacy with you all:

And again, I can’t thank you enough for your comments and prayers. I miss him so very much.

Yet again, I have to thank my wonderful advertisers for August! You can click their buttons to get to their sites…

I couldn’t do it without all of you!

Have a fabulous Labor Day weekend!!

  1. TDC..
Love visiting and sharing in all your delightful posts..
    Today was no exception!!
    warm and inviting..
even helped myself to a cuppa as i sat down..
and made myself right at home!!
    warm sandy hugs..
    laughing smiles too!

  2. Wow, what a month for you! Loved reading along. :)

  3. I am so happy for all the wonderful things in your life. It is so nice to see people realize the good things and really appreciate them.

I'm right there with you when it comes to liking stuff, I need to have a garage sale and make several trips to Goodwill with whatever doesn't sell. It's amazing how fast we can accumulate stuff.

I experienced a ridiculously difficult loss in January, but it might as well have been today for how it feels. She was just about to turn 17 and it was a car accident, but like your father in law, she knew how very loved she is.

You've worked to bring a quality reliable blog to all of us out here in the stratosphere. It's the in the first three places I go online every day.

So... thank you for sharing yourself and your labors of love with us. You deserve every bit of recognition you receive.

  4. Sarah,
You are amazing! Scrolling through all you've accomplished in ONE month seemed like it had been much longer. For most that would have been 6 months to a years worth of accomplishments. Our prayers are still with you and your family. You will carry with you many happy memories of your father in law, so he will never be far.

  5. Here is to a wonderful September!!

  6. Love love LOVE your blog, Sarah! And August was a BUSY month for you!! :)

I just wanted to tell you that your post about Dave Ramsey inspired me -- I had heard of him and his books before, but never really looked into them. I signed up for his website, podcasts and budgeting tools -- and I'm SO excited to start paying off our cars and house! Thank you SO much for that post -- sometimes it just takes the right person or wording to point people in the right direction. :)

  7. What a month indeed. I'm glad to read that your Dave Ramsey post inspired some people. It's what got me here but after reading that post I looked around and added you to my daily reading because I just love what you're doing here. You even inspired me to start repainting my kitchen cabinet handles (with over 40 of the suckers, it's not so cheap to replace them outright), hang some bamboo blinds of my own (complete with FAB new curtains and tiebacks!), and start stripping down an old dresser in preparation for repainting it and giving it a complete update. Plus I found somebody else who spends all year counting down to the beginning of autumn.

  8. Great month! I didn't think I ever missed a post of yours but I did miss a couple - great idea to do a review!
I have really been thinking about your "Stuff" post - and wanting to dig in and get rid of some of mine. Sounds like a Labor Day weekend activity!

  9. Wahooooo! I totally know Kelsy! Lucky gal. Great month with great info as always! :)

  10. Congrats! You're 2 bills closer to financial freedom!
    We love Dave, too!

  11. You are going to LOVE FPU (finacial peace university). We are trying to start a class for our church since we loved it so much and are DEBT FREE!!!!! Congrats again!!

  12. Whew! You've had a lot of stuff going on. I love the farmhouse table and the clock turned cloche. You're a clever girl. :)

  13. Love Dave Ramsey. Saw him live in Houston and he was great. Congrats on paying off the car- me too!!! As Dave would say, "drives differently now", huh?!

  14. One of my favorite Dave Ramsey quotes is "act your wage" :). For some reason, his principles clicked with me and I feel truly blessed that it did. While others laughed at us (including family!), we did everything we could to get our debt snowball rolling. I downloaded the free podcasts off iTunes and listened every day while balancing the checkbook. Less than two years later, we're down to one car payment, the mortgage and the last of student loans. That's IT. And it feels AMAZING!! Keep it up!!! :)

  15. Another great month! Keep it up. Love you and your posts!

  16. We are also on the Dave Ramsey Plan and this was our first month without a car payment! It feels so good! We also have a small amount of credit card debt to clean up before moving on to Baby Step 3. It is sometimes a tough road to travel - but I know it will be worth it in the long run. Good luck to you! Glad to be in good company!

  17. Another excellent month!

A new PB catalog? Where's mine?! Is it because I never buy anything from it?

    Yes, I'm whining... :(

  18. Wow! I feel like I haven't done NEARLY enough in the last month!!! :)

We have paid off all of our cards, and I just paid cash for a new (to me) car. VERY excited! All we have left that we owe on is our house, my hubby's truck, and my student loan. We are paying double each month on the truck. We started it after doing the class you're in. You are well on your way!! :)

I saw them link to you, and forgot to say congrats!!!

  19. Sheesh, those dark treads and crisp white wainscoating sure do make the stairwell pop. Super nice!

  20. Woot are on your way with Dave. Congrats on the car. :)

Wow...your month? All in one place? You have done a TON, so thrilled about your best month ever.

  21. Loved the precious article about your father in law. You are very blessed to have had him.

The stairway totally inspired me! I'm super excited! Watch out Fiona's stairway!

And we are so doing the "Dave Ramsey" thing too! It has changed us forever!

    God Bless!!!

  22. Sarah
As usual you have out done yourself with this post! Love the pic of your farm table. Your stairs look amazing, and what a fabulous cloche! You are so clever.

Im also excited that you have had the opportunity to work with Dave. His office is next door to mine. In fact if you come to TN to take the peace university in Brentwood pop on by to say hello! What I love most about him is his work ethic, kindness and love of God. His employeess come in to my store all the time to shop and I am blown away. He has 300 employees working for him, and they ALL adore him, look up to him and look to him for advice. To have that many employees that happy, he must be doing something right!! Have a fabulous Monday!

  23. On a side note, so sorry to hear about your father in law. The pic you included is a wonderful photo of him!

  24. What a great month you've had on your cute blog:)

  25. I know this is so wrong of me, but I think Dave Ramsey is hot.
    Just sayin'.

  26. I found you through your 9/11 post and was immediately hooked. I used to be like you (in every way but the band you like with all the letters that I've never heard of), but when we adopted 2 special needs teenagers a few years ago and started a new company that is struggling in this recession at the same time, I suddenly ran out of energy.

You've inspired me to get back to one of my great loves, decorating on a budget. I think I'm going to start with our staircase - which couldn't look any worse, even if there aren't hardwood floors under there and I end up painting the treads too. I'll have to remember to take before pictures for my blog.

  27. Arrgh! It ate my comment! Short version - thank you for the post on 9/11. It was beautiful and made me cry!
