Red, white and blue powder room?

August 02, 2012

Hey hey! I’m back with an update on the plan for the powder room redo. It’s been a long time coming and I told you about the sorry state of this room back in this post.

I showed you how I used an online paint tool to find colors from this artwork the Bub painted:

It’s serving as my inspiration for this room. Thing is, the colors are definitely outside my comfort zone – they are brighter than I usually go with, but that’s kind of the point. I want to do something different in here and I think small spaces like a powder room are the perfect opportunity to do that!

To sooth my color jitters a bit, I did a search of blue and red rooms on Pinterest, and it definitely helped. :) I am going for a classic (not necessarily Americana) but fun look in this space and seeing these spaces calmed my nerves.

They are lovely!:

Isn’t that a sweet, comfy room?

This is one of my favorites – check out those gorgeous drapes:

I love the way all of the prints work together too.

The walls in this space are close to the current walls in our bathroom:

My plan is to keep the light blue ceiling in here to tie everything together, and this shows me it can work!

This blue is a little brighter but also works:

And here’s yet another light blue wall with the red touches and it doesn’t scream Fourth of July to me at all:

I think this color combo is just a total classic and I’m getting really excited to make it work in our powder room!

Here’s a reminder of the colors SW picked out from the artwork:

Sherwin Williams chip it

They were actually spot on – they matched the art perfectly. The Fireworks color was a little more pink than I wanted for this room, so I went to the paint chip and the next darker color was perfect.

It’s called Heartthrob and it is FUN! I thought I would test it out first to see what I thought, so I grabbed the one and only accessory I currently have in this space, my little tray I use for extra TP:

I sprayed it down with a quick coat of primer (to hide the print) and then did two coats of Heartthrob. Against the light blue wall, with the white toilet, it gave me an idea of how this color scheme will work look in this room:

I dig it. :)

The Bub’s art will go in the room somewhere, and you can see how well it works here:

The Heartthrob color picks up the darker tones in the art, the Fireworks color matched the lighter ones.

So are you seeing my vision?? Maybe I’m not so crazy after all! :)

I’ve already started the painting and wall treatment in here and I can’t wait to show you. It’s bold but I love it! (You can see my plans for this room at my powder room Pinterest board here.)

I’ll update you soon on the progress! Have a GREAT weekend!! Enjoy the summer, it’s slipping away! :)

  1. I've had lots of fun with the colortopia program from glidden paint, too. Good luck going bold, be brave -- it is just paint

  2. This Chip It tool has got to be the coolest thing! I put it on my tool bar and can't wait to start using it. Love the red and blue in your powder room, and you're right...it doesn't remind me of 4th of July. Um, and hello?! You win the coolest toilet handle on the planet award!! And thank you for the second inspiration pic. Now I know what curtains I am looking for in my dining room. YAY!!

  8. it's gonna look fabulous...as usual for you! That
is wonderful that you are using your sons art work!
I teach preschool and it makes me so sad to see
a home that doesn't have something that proves there
are little people living there! That time goes by
    so quickly!

  9. I like the direction you're taking with the bathroom and using the Bub's artwork is going to be special.

Add me to the list of people saying they like that toilet handle. Fun looking!

  10. I love the red with the light blue. I've had a red living room for many years and I'm still not tired of it, but I had never thought of pairing it with blue. I'm a regular reader of your blog.

  11. Your bathroom is going to look great! Can't wait to see how everything works together.

Chip it is so fun, isn't it? Have you tried the SW ColorSnap app for smartphones? It's basically the same premise only you're getting the colors from things you take pictures of with your smartphone, rather than uploading the pic to your computer.

    Fun stuff!

  14. I painted two of the walls in my son's room Heartthrob. It took a lot of coats, but we all LOVE the color. I couldn't do it for a main room, but for 2 walls in a 3 year old's room it's perfect! Thanks for the info on the chip it! That's awesome!

  16. I love the painted tray. Not a pink fan, but that colour is great. Interesting idea for extra TP. That would work well in my basement bathroom where I have no storage. Looking forward to seeing your finished room. :)

  18. Love it! I had a bathroom painted red in our first house & I absolutely loved it. I keep wanting to repaint my dining room with it but the thought of painting red over a burgundyish color makes me nauseous. HA!

  19. Don't ever be afraid of color. You'll love it and it will become your favorite room, I promise.

  20. You are converting me to the chip it tool! I wish I would've used that before I painted my family room. The color turned out darker then I envisioned and now I want to cry because I can't bear the thought of repainting. Sigh.

Love that color of red. It's just perfect.

Also, love the knob on the toilet. Please tell me how that works.
