Four DELICIOUS & easy Crock-Pot soup recipes

July 22, 2021

My four absolute favorite comfort food slow cooker meals! They are creamy, delicious and super easy.

Three of these are creamier, chicken slow cooker soup recipes, and one is a classic CHEESEY mac and cheese. I mean...how can you go wrong?

I enjoy making these crock pot meals as much in the warmer months as I do in the cooler ones. I call them all "comfort foods" -- but that goes any time of the year!

I’m sharing some of our favorites and a few changes that I make to the original recipes.

First up – this truly scrumptious slow cooker chicken and dumplings recipe:

Crock Pot Chicken and Dumplings

crock pot chicken and dumplings made with biscuits

This post may contain affiliate links for your convenience.
See my policies and disclosure page for more information.

I first found this recipe ten years ago (the blog is no longer operating).

It is SOOOOO good!

I am a chicken and dumplings NUT. This one does not disappoint and you'll be surprised at how easy it us.

Crock pot chicken and dumplings

4-6 boneless skinless chicken breasts
2 tablespoons butter
2 cans cream of chicken soup
1 can chicken broth
1 onion diced (I used half of one)
1 tablespoon dried parsley
4 grands flaky refrigerator biscuits (add more if you want!)

  1. Put the chicken, butter, cream of chicken, chicken broth, parsley and onions in the crock pot and cook on high for four to six hours. Mine only needed about five.
  2. As the chicken cooks and gets tender, break it up with a spoon or fork.
  3. Get your biscuits and cut them into nine pieces. I kind of rolled them into balls to ensure they stayed whole but it’s not necessary. Stir into chicken mixture and cook for another 30 minutes to hour. (Watch to see how they are "baking" in the soup. Mine are usually done around 30 minutes.)
If your soup is a bit thick, add chicken broth or chicken soup to your liking.
It is SO delicious!! And so much easier than making your own "dumplings."

Crock Pot Easy Mac and Cheese

no stir crock pot macaroni and cheese

Crazy easy slow cooker mac and cheese

1/2 pound elbow macaroni
4 cups finely shredded Cheddar cheese, divided
1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
1 1/2 cups milk
1 egg
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
Dash of Worcestershire sauce

  1. Very important before you do anything – spray the crock pot well with cooking spray. Or you can use these slow cooker bags that are safe for high heat. Clean up is a breeze!
  2. Mix the egg, fresh milk, evaporated milk, and Worcestershire together in a large bowl. Mix in the uncooked macaroni and three cups of shredded cheese. Pour into the crock pot and sprinkle the remaining cheese on top.
  3. Cook on low for four to five hours -- check around four because that's when mine is about ready. Do not stir or remove lid while cooking.
That whole not stirring thing was so hard for me. I always feel the need to stir. :)

The first time I made this I used thicker shredded cheese, but I find finely shredded works better.

I saved the best for last...this creamy chicken and wild rice soup is fantastic! I first found this recipe here.

Crock Pot Creamy Chicken and Wild Rice Soup

Creamy crock pot wild rice and chicken soup

Ohhh…I’m drooling just thinking about it. SO. GOOD.

This one takes a bit more work, but it’s worth it!

Crock pot creamy chicken and wild rice soup

4 cups chicken broth
2 cups water
2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1 package of Rice-a-Roni long grain and wild rice
1/2 tsp salt (plus more to taste)
1/2 tsp pepper
3/4 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup butter
2 cups half and half
1 cup grated carrots
1 cup diced celery
and/or
1 small can mushrooms

  1. Mix the broth, water, carrots, celery, mushrooms, chicken and rice and the rice seasoning packet in the slow cooker
  2. Cook on low for six to eight hours or on high for four hours. I did the high version and it turned out great.
  3. Once chicken gets tender (couple hours in), break it up into pieces with a fork while cooking.
best chicken and wild rice soup

At the end of the cooking time, get a small bowl and mix the salt, pepper and flour.

Next, in a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Stir in the flour mixture a tablespoon at a time to form a roux.

A roux is a mixture used as thickener for stews, soups and gravy.

While still on low heat, finish the roux by whisking in the half and half a little at a time until completely smooth:
How to make a roux for soup

Stir this yummy mixture into the soup in the crock pot then let it cook on low for 15 more minutes.

Then die and go to heaven cause it tastes that good

We like our chicken and wild rice soup thicker, almost like gravy. If you prefer it thinner you can add additional chicken broth. I would wait to see how it cooks up first though.

Because...come on:
easy slow cooker chicken and wild rice soup

I know many of you have tried this and it's a favorite of yours as well!

You can’t go wrong with any of these favorite slow cooker comfort foods.

Are there any easy crock pot recipes you love? Feel free to share!

  3. All of these recipes look great. But since it is still in the 100s out here, we are going to wait on eating anything hot.

  4. The 5 pounds from just looking at all of that so welcome!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Yum! I started to think I should just stay away because they look too good and then I got to the creamy chicken soup. Yeah...that's saved!

  6. Hey Sarah --- one of the best recipes on my blog is angel chicken. So so good!!! Yes try the mac n cheese again. My crock pot is probably older. It was a wedding gift 15 years ago:)http://cleverlyinspired.blogspot.com/2011/02/angel-chickenslow-cooker.html

  7. I have been loving my crockpot lately too! (Crockpot Girls on FB has been rather inspiring...) Last night I made Blueberry Cobbler in my crockpot, and today I did a Biscuit-topped Potpie. Yummy! Planning to try a bread pudding next, I think. Or, maybe steel cut oats....

  8. It all looks amazing... but let me say, that Chicken and Dumplings recipe really is amazing. In fact, I've got a can of buscuits in the fridge right now because I'm making them tomorrow! Now that it's cold I'm ready for comfort food again(but I guess I made chili last week when it was 90 degrees too, so maybe I'm just ready for fall!)

    ReplyDelete
  9. Great recipes and I hope to use a couple of them soon. We have a big bowl of pinto beans soaking overnight and will cook these up tomorrow and add a skillet of cornbread. Fall is for comfort food! Can't wait to see what you cook up when you get your kitchen back!

  10. I *heart* my crockpot! Thanks for teasing me with all this yumminess! The hubby and I are on the south beach diet so half of this stuff is a big fat no. I use my crockpot in the summer a lot. No slaving over a hot stove! We like spicy pork stew, chicken noodle soup, bbq chicken and pot roast. Yum yum yum! :)

  12. Of course it is cooking!! Of course, I say I cooked dinner if I order pizza or drive through Subway... so maybe I am not the best one to ask! :) Thank you for sharing your recipes! I need new ones! I only make about 3-4 meals in the crockpot.. but they all are yummy- I need a few new ones! Also, I wanted to let you know they make liners for crockpots to make clean up a breeze... after all... you shouldn't have to cook and clean! :)

  14. I LOVE using my crockpot, it makes life easy lol. Those recipes look yummy. I have a chicken and dumplings recipe from my mother but it requires making my own dough, but it would be nice to have quicker biscuit option. Also, I never would have thought to make mac and cheese in a crockpot but I think I will give it a shot.

Thanks for helping me look forward to those chilly evenings :-)

  15. I'm drooling over the Chicken & Dumplings! Definitely going to try it once the weather cools down (it's still 100 degrees here in Southern California).

    ReplyDelete
  16. I am definitely trying the chicken and dumplings and mac and cheese. Thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yum! Cannot wait to try these. Thanks for posting with your added comments.

  18. I was wondering how your chicken & dumplings turned out. Thanks so much for the other recipes, too.

I've been on a serious comfort-food kick lately, which is really not normal for me. You can bet I'm gonna try all these recipes.

  19. These ALL sound wonderful! I can't decide which one I want to make first. I use my crock pot a lot. Even in the summer because it doesn't heat up the entire kitchen and it saves a lot on the electric bill. I always use it to cook my chicken if it will be going into a casserole. It comes out much more tender. Thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm SO excited you shared these recipes! I have been wanting to dig out my ol' crock pot for a while now, but haven't been overly motivated to search for some new recipes. Thanks for sharing :) Love the post!

  21. i JUST posted about my love for crock pots a few days ago! You can check it out here if you want: http://thecellardoorstories.blogspot.com/2011/09/crock-pot-cooking.html

  22. My crockpot is such a lifesaver with 3 young kiddos and another one the way next month! Our absolute FAVORITE is Crockpot Chicken. Sounds boring but it is simply A.MA.ZING! 3 large chicken breasts, 1 can Cream of Chicken, 1 package of Cream Cheese, and 1 Zesty Italian Seasoning packet. Put all together and cook on low for 6 hours. Shred chicken. Make some egg noodles about 5 minutes before chicken is ready - then top egg noodles with the chicken mixture. Even my PICKY kids will eat this and ask for more. I promise it's a keeper! :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thanks for the post! I was actually just getting ready to look up what to make for dinner. I decided on your chicken and dumplings recipe. It looks so good!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thanks for sharing the chicken and dumplings. I think that could have the potential to be a crowd pleaser, even for my 3 year old, whose food groups include chicken nuggets, fruit, green beans, and cake.

It was COLD here yesterday. Cold! I am a little disappointed b/c the weather says it will be back up to 85 next week...so I guess it is a good thing that I bought some short sleeved stuff for the girls to wear to school....

  25. My mouth is drooooooolin. Thanks for sharing!!

  26. Roux! I'm from South Louisiana, so I'm pretty familiar with that. A lot of the recipes around here start with, "first, you make a roux." They even had jarred roux at the grocery store now (but I'd rather make my own). Gotta make it just right 'cause a bad roux can destroy a dish. But it sure can make some yummy food.

I too looove my crockpot. Sometimes I just stew my meats in it to add to a stove cooked soup later in the evening, or sometimes I do it all in the crockpot. So handy! I imagine your cooking times vary based on the power/heat of the individual crockpot, much like microwave times vary.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yum! I'll take a bowl of each :-)

    ReplyDelete
  28. I repinned that chicken and wild rice soup last night. That's one of my favorite soups. Try it in a bread bowl for pure awesomeness.

And here's a tip for totally awesome cheater breadbowls: buy frozen bread dough. Let it thaw, then cut one loaf into 4 pieces. Roll them into ball shapes and bake. Super yummy!

  29. So funny--I call Cracker Barrel Crate & Barrel all the time. Glad I'm not the only one who has C&B on the brain. Ha.

I'm printing out this chicken & dumplings recipe and giving it a shot asap. Looks delish. Thanks, Sarah! :)

  30. I think I'm the only woman in America who doesn't own a crock pot...but as our days get busier, I think I'll have to cave. That is, unless cereal for dinner continues to be acceptable to my kids. :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm so glad you tried that ckn and dumplin recipe...i've seen it and wanted to try it so it's on the menu this week!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks! These all looks like things my family would LOVE. Here's another one for you. . .and if you don't like pork tenderloin, use chicken breasts. My son requested this for his BIRTHDAY -- ha! So good and so easy.
When you said cut up the biscuits in 9 pieces, did you mean each biscuit in 9 pieces?

  33. These sound DELICIOUS! Thanks so much for sharing - can't wait to give them a try!

  34. They sell disposable liners for crockpots now! They are similar to cooking bags for turkey, etc. On camp outs I cook almost exclusively with my crockpot. The liners are so easy! Place it in the crockpot, cook, then toss. No messy clean up! I swear by them! lol

    ReplyDelete
  35. OK, guess I didn't give you the link for the pork tenderloin. . .http://jennisseasons.blogspot.com/2010/01/sunday-dinner.html
Going through your comments I've found lots of other things to try too :) Great post. Thank you.

  36. LOL! I am in the same mind set! It was 95 degrees here yesterday and do you know what I served for dinner? The Pioneer
Woman's spicy pinto beans with cornbread. All kinds of wrong for the weather, but still so dang good! I am book-marking this and am going to try each of these recipes! MMMM.

  37. Hey Sarah - you go girl! I love cooking and these recipes look easy and sooo delicious. In the years I've had my crock pot, I think I've used it maybe 5 times. This year I need to use it more. It's soo nice to put it on in the morning and have dinner waiting for you. Thanks for sharing. I'll be pinning all of those recipes. Although, I think I've already pinned the mac and cheese. It looks soo yummy. : )

  42. Thank you! I'm back to work after 5 months of maternity and we're trying to do 2 crockpot dinners a week so I can spend more of my afternoons snuggling my two girls and less cooking. I've been pinning/printing tons of recipes lately. Glad to see the review of the chicken and rice soup!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I've seen all three of those recipes on Pinterest and actually pinned the soup recipe myself. I wasn't sure how the chicken and dumplings would be, since it's hard to beat the ones at Cracker Barrell. LOL

I love when someone actually makes a recipe they've pinned and shares how it went. I'm going to add the dumplings to my "to make" list.

That chicken and rice soup sounds amazing. I think I'll make it first. :P

    Thanks, Sarah.

  44. I've been making that exact same soup on the stove for a few years now, but it never occurred to me to use the crockpot! I cannot wait for cool fall weather so I can try these out!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Have you tried the "America's Test Kitchen - Slow Cooker Revolution" book?

I'm gonna be cooking my way through that puppy. :)

Thanks for telling us about the Chicken and Dumplings. Gosh how I love the ones at Cracker Barrel.

And, yes, I call it Crate and Barrel on accident all the time, too.)

  46. Thank You and my Husband Thanks you too!! ;) Perfect timing for the crock pot to come out with Soccer and School we like to have these quick YUMMY Meals ready to go at the end of the Busy Days!!

  47. I tried the mac&cheese earlier this week after you first posted it and had the same issues of it over-cooking and sticking like crazy despite the cooking spray. Its worth a try again though!

Tonight I tried the chicken and dumplings because my husband can't get enough of them at Cracker Barrel. He said the only thing missing was the mashed potatoes. They were really good! Thanks for the recipes!

  48. these sound great - I can't wait to try them. I'll share my tip - Reynolds makes a Crock Pot LINER!!! yes Liner, awesome - no messy clean up. They are about 1.85 at my local Winco near the foil and plastic wraps - made like oven cooking bags but big enough for a crock pot. they have changed my life - at least when it comes to cooking in a crock pot!

  50. we do 15 bean soup in the fall-its really complicated :P

Half a package of 15 bean soup mix
one box vegetable stock (low sodium)

spices to tase-if you like it hot, add habajeros, etc

    Sometimes we add carrots/spinach.

Just throw it all in the crock pot, adjusting the liquid so its 3/4 of the way up the pot.

Put the lid on, heat on slow, and when you get home from work/etc voila!

A healthy dinner-just add some crusty french bread and a salad/veggie.

My hubby is the cheese freak here...me, not so much, but I may have to give that Mac and Cheese a try :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. WooHoo! Thanks for the chicken and dumpling one especially, but we are going to try the chicken and wild rice one too. I always have the chicken and dumplings at Crate an...oops Cracker Barrel. And I've actually started decorating for fall...well it IS September!

  52. I'm too lazy to read the comments but do you know about Reynold's Slow Cooker liners. They make using the Crock Pot even better than it already is!! All you do is place the liner in and add your ingredients. When you are done..you just throw the liner away...no scrubbing!

I also tried the mac and cheese but it curdled a little. Wasn't a fan!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I so love chicken and dumplins!! I can not wait to try!

  54. Crockpot cooking comes in handy when you're too busy to spend alot of time in the kitchen....I don't use it enough!
It's especially good to use when it's hot outside and you don't want to heat up the kitchen!
I've got a crockpot cookbook, too!

I'm going to have to try the Chicken and Dumplings...I haven't made dumplings in years!!!
    Thanks for sharing :)

    ReplyDelete
  55. I'm definitely going to try the chicken soup! I will exchange the celery for mushrooms and the wild rice for regular rice. Thanks for sharing!
I don't know if you've found it yet or not, but if you look me up on pinterest, I've repinned a fantastic recipe for "cream of" soup. Its like a powdered mixture that you can keep on hand to use when a recipe calls for "cream of..." I'm so glad I found it on pinterest. You should check it out.

  56. I made the chicken and dumplings for dinner last night and it was so yummy! Perfect for a cool, rainy night. I think it'll be a new family favorite. Thanks for the recipe, Sarah! :)

  58. I am completely in love with my crockpot. I just recently made beef stroganoff in it and it was so tasty and didn't take hardly anytime to complete!
My husband's favorite is hawaiian pork in the crockpot though. :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Love using my slow cooker. It's a major time saver and there are usually leftovers! Thanks for the new recipes.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I make chicken and dumplings a lot during the fall and winter. My recipe is similar to yours except that use about a teaspoon of poultry seasoning and celery. Both of these ingredients make a huge difference in the savory-ness of the dish. I've never tried it in the crock pot though but now I will.

    ReplyDelete
  61. YUMMY! I must try these! And, I'm sure someone mentioned it above, but you *must* become a fan of "Crock Pot Girls" on Facebook, along with "Skinny Crock Pot" ... a bazillion crock pot recipes to drool over and try!

  65. i don't know if you could email me ASAP, but i am at the point of adding the biscuits to the chix and biscuits and realized i bought 4 tubes of the grands biscuits thinking the recipe called for 4 tubes - does it call for 4 tubes of biscuits or just 4 biscuits??? i am SO not a cook and thought i'd impress my hubby with this but geesh, i'm not sure what to do at this point :) thanks!!!

  66. I had the same problem when I made this crock pot mac n cheese! I should have turned it off like and hour before and it could have been a lot creamier. But the flavor was still good. Next time I'll know! P.S. Next time I will also know to super grease the pot b/c some of the macaroni was welded on!

  67. Thanks for really yummy crockpot recipes!!!!

  68. If you take the chicken out and thaw it just partially, you can cut it into cubes ahead of time. No fuss, no muss. Good luck!

  69. I'm going to try a couple of these recipes. I love comfort food in cold weather! One of my favorites is The Mushroom Soup, from Pioneer Woman's Tasty Kitchen. Mushrooms, tomato sauce, cream and wine.... it's amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  70. They all look amazing, I tried today to make the creamy chicken and wild rice soup. It didn't come as amazing as yours did, it doesn't even look as amazing... :( The only thing I did different is used Rice-a-Roni Long Grain and Wild Rice, but used the "natural" version they have out now. I guess the spices aren't the same, and maybe it has less rice because you can barely see the rice now that it's done. I'm going to let it cool and put it in the fridge and bring it out tomorrow to re-season, sometimes things taste better the next day....So word of warning if anyone wants to make it- use the regular Rice-a roni wild rice. I will try it again...

    ReplyDelete
  71. Sarah, tried the chicken and wild rice tonight, total hit!! Thanks for posting! I got almost gravy like too but used more chicken and uncle ben's. I left out the celery and added mushrooms but was asked for both plus broccoli next time. Thanks again for posting!

  72. LOVE the crock pot mac n cheese recipe. Thanks for sharing

  73. Okay, my husband and I have made all three recipes for our family. Each was SO GOOD! The only addition I would make to any recipe, would be the addition of slivered almonds to the wild rice soup. The bit of crunchy is so good. Thanks so much for posting!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Thanks for posting these! I have a Christmas pot luck at work and need to bring a Crock Pot recipe. I think the Mac and Cheese is perfect!
