Month in review and hydrangea update

Hello all and WHOOT for Friday! We’re having a blast so far this summer, hope yours has been great! I’m back with another month in review for May, and I’m a little behind. Whatevs.

I’m trying to keep up with questions in the posts too, so if you’ve had any in the comments on these posts, go back and take a look – you should see a response! Or you will by the end of the weekend. :)

First up was a super yummy, super easy dessert I found:

two ingredient dessert

Only two ingredients and it’s SO GOOD! I tried it with cherry filling too, but I still prefer the pineapple. YUMMO.

We had an interested discussion about shopping Goodwill and how the prices have changed:

I guess I wasn’t the only one who has noticed a change! I will continue to shop there, it’s just not as often as I used to.

There was a lot of powder room progress, finally! I shared some of it here and the new paint color here:

And my cheater crown molding method here:

No, I haven’t abandoned the room again. Well, kinda. It’s thisclose to done!! I just have to finish painting some trim and I’ve been putting it off. It WILL be done next week, stay tuned for the reveal!

I shared a small change that I thought made a big difference in the living room:

Go here to see what it was. :)

I celebrated five years of blogging in May and shared my thoughts, advice and what I consider my top five projects here:

stained stairs

Ripping the carpet off those stairs was high on that list. :)

I have a favorite resource for inexpensive and fun knobs:

Their selection is HUGE too!

Towards the end of the month I showed you our backyard garden, as it is now:

We’ve already added a few new things back there, but what I’m most excited about is the hydrangea progress! If you remember back on this post last summer, I told you how I cannot get them to grow! I moved them around last year and they did OK, but still didn’t bloom.

This was one set of plants as they were in that post:

growing hydrangeas

And this is them now, just two weeks later!:

We have had the MOST glorious summer so far – seriously amazing. Low temps, lots of rain – they LOVE it:

That one has a ton of blooms going on it, and the others are flowering as well:

Here’s the area on the back of the patio before:

I took out the one that had died and replaced it with a new one, so I can’t take credit for the large one on the left:

Well, I guess I can take credit that it’s still alive and blooming. ;) But the others are doing much better. Oh yeah, and there’s a tree there now too. We put it there for shade on the patio, but I’m hoping it gives those hydrangeas some much needed relief from the sun in the hotter months as well.

Have I mentioned how happy I am that for the first time ever…I have blooms!!:

Awesome, eh? I am so excited!! I have hope hydrangeas don’t hate me anymore.

Finally, I finished off the month with a spot in the master I call the “man nook”:

That corner used to be dark and gloomy, now it’s a pretty spot that the hubby loves to use! I’m starting on some big changes in this room this weekend!

That’s it for the month of May – did you miss one? :) How has your summer weather been so far? Have a great weekend peeps, I’ll see you back here next week!

  1. You busy girl! I missed the hydrangea post, and can so relate! One year we had a landscaper trim our bushes, and we must have trimmed them at the wrong time, because we had NO blooms. Well, one huge one on one plant, but that was it. The next year I didn't touch them and they did great. Definitely heat sensitive little buggers. I need to transplant some of mine because they wilt in the sun like nobody's business! I understand your excitement at seeing some blooms - they're looking gorgeous!

  2. Is that a sewing machine cabinet in the last picture? It sure looks like one... (I have several of my own).

  3. Your backyard is beautiful! I'm so jealous because mine is a hot mess getting ready for our pool to be put in. I have a feeling it's going to take forever to put back together. I love, love, love hydrangeas. I've tried growing them, but it's just too darn hot here. My landscaper was right when he asked me,"Have you seen anyone in this town with hydrangeas in their yard?" Point taken.

  4. Your yard looks lovely, especially the hydrangeas. How wonderful they are blooming already!

  5. Girl your energy wears me out...I would love to be able to accomplish that you do in a year let alone a month...maybe someday! And I am envious of your hydrangeas...I am trying to get mine to grow-we planted two last year & we struggle...oh how we struggle!!! I have planted them in various places in our yard for about the last 6 years and so far these are the only ones that have made it. And then my sweet hubby sprayed the yard about a month ago didn't realize the spray would get on the hydrangeas, too...needless to stay they got a little and some of the leaves have some damage but I think they are gonna make has two blooms and they other has one. I have petted and petted them since we planted them last summer & I am NOT gonna give up!!!! I even went as far last summer to set a lawn chair over each of them when I left for work to make sure they didn't get exposed to too much sun during the day...they would have been fine but I was afraid! I think our neighbors think I am a lunatic...that is another story for another

  6. I just discovered your awesome blog! I love your crown molding method and will definitely have to add that to my bag of tricks. And your hydrangeas look gorgeous. I've been wanting to plant some for a while now.

  7. I feel like hydrangeas are all about finding that sweet spot! I planted one small plant that my husband bought me last year from Lowe's and it grew and bloomed like crazy for a few months. This year it has tripled in size and the number of blooms, I love it! I can't wait until it turns into a huge bush like some I've seen around our neighborhood.

  8. I love the way your backyard garden looks -- so neat and tidy and pretty! It has me motivated to fix up my backyard -- there is a planting area backing to a fence that has some buses in it. I think I'll get some mulch, build up the bed and edge it, too!

  9. I have to say your backyard is so gorgeous. I know how much effort and work it takes (because mine is no where near as pulled together as yours) :-). Fabulous job, looks like a relaxing place to enjoy your summer!!

  10. Do you mind telling where you got the fringed off-white rug in your living room? I need that! I also need my hydrangeas to look as good as yours. ;) (mccrayka[at]gmail[dot]com)

  11. I had the same exact problem with my hydrangeas. From what I've read, some hydrangeas bloom off old wood and some off new wood, so if you prune at the wrong time, you won't get blooms. From what I can figure out, I pruned them at the wrong time. :( Finally after 2 years, my hydrangeas bloomed again! I was so excited! I read that they need to be pruned prior to August, so I'm going to try that this time and hope I don't screw it up again. :)

I LOVE your comments, thank you! (I read every single one.)
