DIY Christmas Ho Ho Ho block decor with second hand finds.
Little overboard, I know. But I'm serious. I love it.
We have a local company nearby that puts together a HUGE light display on their land and they have everything ready to go...I was so excited when I saw that today.
I finished my first Christmas project tonight!
I bought this little doohickey a couple weeks ago at Goodwill (GO! And take some imagination with you!) knowing exactly what I would do with it, and it turned out just as I hoped.
I got this for $1.99:

I painted the inside white, the outside Santa Red (that's what it's really called!), painted the blocks and added some scrapbook paper to the fronts.
The letters are foam and I covered them with glitter:

I love how the glitter almost looks snowy. Precious!!
I can use it like the picture above, or like this:
Or this:
Or this:
OK, that may be pushing it, but you get the idea. Can you get better for $1.99?
I have so many fun Goodwill/garage sale finds to show you later this week that I need advice on. Here's one as a teaser:
This cutie patoot sled was five bucks. Would you leave this as is or repaint it? I see it with a brighter red (maybe Santa red? Hmmm...)
What do you think? I also have picked up a few items that I'm going to redo as gifts. I think I can really make them shine. We'll see.
***Edited to add this little tip I found out about Goodwill: If an employee there sees something they like as it comes on the floor, they can purchase it if it hasn't sold within 24 hours (or some time frame like that -- can't remember the exact amount).
One of my recent finds was turned backwards, on the bottom shelf. And when the employee saw I found it, he told us this little tidbit. So DIG women, DIG! Look on the bottom shelf, look under things. You might find extra special treasures. I'd be hiding the good stuff too. :)
Never miss a post by signing up to get posts via email.
Oh wow way to scare me I need to get shopping NOW! Love the project, what a deal :) Can't wait to see more.
ReplyDeleteToo Cute!! I'm off to Goodwill tomorrow to see what goodies I can find.
ReplyDeleteLove your Christmas craft!!! It turned out soooo cute!!!! How did you glitter the letters? Did you use spray adhesive? Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteReally cute re-do! I'd paint that sleigh a brighter red, and it needs jingle bells, I think!
ReplyDeleteVery creative! Love the HOHOHO! I love a good thrift find! I'll be sure to dig more knowing that little tip. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYou are a girl after my own heart! I am so thrilled to find somebody as crazy for Christmas as I am! I LOVE IT! I love all the lights and decorations. I have already gotten down 2 of my trees. I like to do several trees around my house. Your craft project is so darn cute! I haven't done anything yet, but you have inspired me and I am raring to go! YAY for Christmas! It's on baby!!!
ReplyDeleteI forgot to mention that cute sled. It looks good as is, but I might paint it if it needs to be a brighter red. It would be cute hanging or sitting with a wreath on it or like a sweater and gloves to look like you'd been sledding. I have an old sled I got at an antique store and I usually just sit it outside and lean it. I need to do something to it to make it cuter. Maybe I'll take my own advice. Can't wait to see what you do with it. See, I'm all giddy now and could keep on and on typing to you about Christmas! I've got it bad!
ReplyDeletelove your enthusiasm and your darling ideas! can't wait to see what you're going to share with us!
ReplyDeleteyou are so talented to see things before you make them! I wish I had just an ounce of your creativity! I have the bargin shopper part...so there is hope!! I so enjoy looking at all your treasures!!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love Goodwill. I never find as good as things as you do though. That is absolutely adorable. I definitely think you should paint the sled a brighter red. It would make it pop.
ReplyDelete49 Days OH NO!!
ReplyDeleteCute block make-over. Adorable idea.
I would keep the sled just as it is if yo are looking for more of a country look. If you want more of a contemporary look, then I would suggest that it be painted Christmas Red. For a more traditional look, blood red.
That's my two bits for ya.
Blessings,
Sher
Love it! I really need to get to Goodwill!
ReplyDeleteBut I am making myself finish up some of my other projects before I go out for new ones. Uggh. I guess it is time to focus....
Love your blog!
Part of why I love the Goodwill (besides price) is that I can get my dig on! Love that kinda thing!
ReplyDeleteSarah, you are a girl after my own heart!!! I love your creativity.. and while others are thinking about Thanksgiving YOU are a true Christmas GIRL.. I love it!!! I would keep the sled the same color, BUT keeping up with your blog, YOU have to paint it. I have one (smaller in front of my bed, on my hope chest) that I put candles on. I would love to see some of your chunky candles on it with greenery! My first post on Christmas was Nov. 1! LOL
ReplyDeleteYou are creating "THRIFT STORE MONSTERS"...LOL. I know at least in me. Very cute, I'm not sure I have enough patience to do that one but for $1.99. YOU GO! I like the sled but I think the wood should be painted (bottom) maybe in or just dark and it just needs "something"? I'm sure you have a stash somewhere that will fix it up. Some super fancy ribbon or add something to it and make it useful like cork board framed out. HAVE FUN!
ReplyDeleteTHat is so adorable!! I wish we had places like that around here. The only thrift stores we have are clothing ones and a Salvation Army. I could check that out.
ReplyDeleteI think you should paint it red and distress it a little. What great finds! Our GW is so picked over!
ReplyDeleteGreat finds! I need to go soon too because I have a project I'm thinking about trying. I love your hohoho blocks!
ReplyDeleteSOOOOOOOOOO cute!!!!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for Christmas either!
Oh man I love the way the sled looks now! I would just distress it, and maybe set out some really worn out santa boots draped over the top by the laces, or a top hat!!!
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOSH that is SOOOOO cute.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it.
-Coco
Oh I think the sled would be cute white and red.
I'm a total thrift store shopper always in search of what I can alter. I actually just did a post about a mirror frame thing that I got from the thrift store and altered. I like the sled...but if it were me I'd maybe distress it a bit. Rough it up...make him look a little worn. But that's me! Love the "ho ho ho's"!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the great deals that sled is great!
ReplyDeleteI love what you did with Goodwill find! I can't wait to see what else you have up your sleeve.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm what if you made the sled into some sort of welcome sign. Maybe to lean it up beside the front door.
ReplyDeleteI love love love your blocks! I need your good will. I have been looking for a sled for I don't know how long. I would just keep it that color, or if it clashes with the reds you uses for Christmas just paint it to match! You are so dang creative! have a great day!
ReplyDeleteGirl, you know those Ho's rock! I can't wait to see what else you do. At my Goodwill, they're not allowed to buy the stuff...I'd have to walk off the job. Lord knows, I was there today & just knew I wouldn't find anything -WRONG!!! You know I'm Dory (Finding Nemo), so come over & remind me around the end of Nov. to play along! I think they said 20% at TJX & co's, but if it's 10% I hope ya'll don't kill me!
ReplyDeleteI love your letters, I think you need a snowflake on the blank one. :)
ReplyDeleteI left you an award come check it out!
ReplyDeleteOh wow, that is incredible! I love, love, love it. I went to the Goodwill here and was so disappointed at their wares. I'm going to keep trying, though.
ReplyDeleteI say paint the sled like thing the same red. As soon as I saw the pic, I thought a bright shiny red would look great. And now I feel the need to go to Goodwill. :)
ReplyDeleteSo clever! Fantastic remake!
ReplyDeleteWOW! I need to go shopping with YOU! I'm going to Goodwill for sure!
ReplyDeleteCONGRATS on being featured on SITS! :)

ReplyDeleteGlad you are the FB at SITS - this is like Christmas in . . .November! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for that tip! I love goodwill..and auctions...and flea markets..and yard sales.
ReplyDeleteI think the sled needs some pine boughs or pine garland too. Love the project. I have a feeling I'm going to be super inspired to do some Christmas projects this year.
Great idea...now the Christmas decorating monster in me is ready to go!
ReplyDeleteGoodwill hmmm, never thought about looking there! I think with sled it depends on your theme for that room...you do have each room in a different like I do right, LOL. Seriously I would probably leave the color and add fresh evergreen and jingle bells...a real woodsy theme!
ReplyDeleteToo cute! You did great with this project (as usual!)
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!!!
that is seriously cute! I'm loving your blog!
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute! I could even do this for other holidays, too. I'm thinking, my mom loves Halloween, I'm sure I could do something with that.
ReplyDeleteVery Very Cute.. Have you thought adding a Candy Cane or something to the empty block?
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh that is great! i'm not crafty at all, even though i so wish i was...

Came over from SITS and love all of your projects! Such great ideas!
ReplyDeleteVery cool blog. I wish I was crafty.
ReplyDeleteAwesome find! I wish I had an ounce of creativity! I really do.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, the sled....I would do the seat part Santa Red, and the sides a deep forest green. That's just me. But see, I told ya I had zero creativity.
You're definitely goin' on the blogroll!
Your blog is pretty and fun to read! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI love your projects; beautiful job! And!!! I love thrift stores! I'll be checking those bottom shelves for sure now!

"Nana's Box"
Happy SITS day! Great blog... I love the block idea, and Goodwill is always a great place for bargain hunting!
ReplyDeleteFIVE bucks? That is a steal. I would add a wreath, and some lights and set it out on my front steps. and put an old pair of boots next to it.
ReplyDeleteI love love love Goodwill. Especially for Halloween and Christmas!!
I once worked in a thrift store and got FIRST DIBS on anything that came in. And got it for a reduced price. It was dreamy!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS feature day! I love this idea! Thanks for the Goodwill advice, I am going to DIG!:)
ReplyDeleteI like the sled the color it is, but I'd add some pine bough, ribbon, & pinecone accents. And, of course, some Jingle Bells!
I'm giving away a cute kids holiday apron on my blog this week if you want to stop by.

I love your ideas and that sled is such a find! I'd love to find one like that for only $5!:)
ReplyDeleteI used to work at a department store and the women would take their size when things went on clearance and hide it so they could get it marked down even more. Seriously- you have to dig for the good stuff sometimes!
ReplyDeleteReaffirms my love of the Goodwill. Happy to find you through SITS!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on today! Your blog is nicely done. I'll come back for more ideas. I really need to de-clutter.

ReplyDeletewow, what a transformation!! Happy SITS day to you!!! You have such creativity. I love thrift shops as well, but I just get the clothes. I have to look and think now when I shop.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your SITS day!
ReplyDeleteThose blocks are SO CUTE!!! And I love the sled too! I think santa red would be fab on it.
ReplyDeleteWOW! I would have NEVER looked at that and thought to make something so beautiful! What a gift you have--seriously. I'm REALLY intimidated by turning something old into something new...
ReplyDeleteI'd paint that sled red and set some poinsettias next to it... but CLEARLY, you're the one with the nifty crafting sense. I can't wait to see what you do with it.
I'm visiting from SITS, but you're SO going into my bookmark!!!
Denene
congrats on your SITS day!!! :D
ReplyDeleteFun fun fun! Ho Ho HO!
ReplyDeleteThat's a cute idea. I'm still a newbie when it comes to decorating (and entirely broke), so I only allow myself to buy one Christmas decoration each year, increasing my stock. Maybe this spring/summer I'll make some stuff, too.
ReplyDeleteSOOO excited you were the blog on SITS.... I'm all about thrifty decor!!! I'll for sure be back!!
ReplyDeleteThat is such a cool idea!!!! Love the way your mind works :)
ReplyDeleteDang. I haven't been to the GW in years. I need to go...as long as you promise to help.

ReplyDeleteGreat Goodwill creation!
ReplyDeleteI think the santa blocks are absolutely ADORABLE! Way to create!
ReplyDeleteI love thrift store finds and thrift store transformations!
ReplyDeleteMy husband took an old sled, hung it up against the wall so the part you sit on is flat against the wall and the underside is facing out. It has these slats on it that we use for shelves. It is very fun!
I love what you did! Don't you just love finding that diamond in the rough. It's been a while since I've been to Goodwill or the Flea Markets I think it's time for a shopping trip!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on being the SITS FB!
That is the cutest little Christmas decoration! I love it! How very imaginative of you =) I'm off to read some more of you blog. Congrats on your SITS day!
ReplyDeleteWow! I never have luck when I go to Goodwill, I always find junk. Your craft turned out so cute. For the sled, I think it needs pine boughs and a big ribbon.

Thanks for sharing the tip about Goodwill. I'm going to start digging around now.
(I've always wondered if I would find better items if I went to the Goodwill in the really nice part of town? Hmmmm?)

ReplyDeleteOh Wow that is so cool, now I want something like that :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on being featured on SITS, very cool blog :) :)
i love that sled just the way it is!! thanks for the shopping tip!
ReplyDeleteThe glitter on the letters really looks neat! What a great project. Wish I had a Goodwill here. We have Salvation Army and the employees get to pick over everything BEFORE it ever gets on the floor.
ReplyDeleteI could see the sled with brighter paint, but it does look good on it's own too. :)
ooooh- you're making me want to hit goodwill right now!!! what a great find- i love it!!!
ReplyDeleteHey! I'm totally cracking up about your edit: DIG GIRL DIG! Thanks great advice though. I'm gonna have to get a sitter and head over to the Goodwill!
ReplyDeleteGreat project! You, of course, are fab-u-lous!
ADORBALE stuff!
ReplyDeleteToo funny that you got that super hint from an employee. You Go Girl! I used to shop at Goodwill for crafty renovations too. I have too many young kids to venture into that store now. It would cost me a fortune (even with the great buys) to get out. You have such an "eye" for the cool stuff.
ReplyDeleteCOngrats on SITS day...that is so cute. You are super talented.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it! I agree with one of the other comments about a snow flake on the last block.
ReplyDeleteI really like the sled too. I have an old antique one that was my moms. I always putit out at Christmas time.
You are so crafty. I would have never thought of somehting like that. Wow!!!
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way about Christmas. I just love this time of year and am getting excited.

Holy Cow! 158 Comments?! You've become uber-popular my dear. Sorry I haven't been by in a bit. I love your thrift store project! It's so cute. Hundreds of other people may have already suggested this, but what about putting an exlamation point (!) on the blank block? Just a thought...
ReplyDeleteI promise to check in more often. Happy holidays!
Wow....first on 159 comments...HOLY COW GIRL!!! Second, what an awsome thrifty blog!!! Last, I love you before and afters!!! Congrats on your SITS day!! I'm glad Heather picked you!
ReplyDeleteNow that I really like -- I agree with you on the snowy letters. And the sled? Definitely needs some wintry items -- either the traditional pine treatment or the melted snowman with a vintage scarf, "carrot" etc hanging off it :) (ok now you know why I'm not in design)
ReplyDeleteThat is so adorable! Such a cute idea :)
ReplyDeleteWOW! I never thought of going to Goodwill! What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI found you on SITS... your blog is great! I love your crafty ideas! I'll be adding you to my favorites!

ReplyDeleteWhat a great tip! And I thought they could just scarf it up right away-so this gives me hope! Adorable projects and I vote RED RED RED for the sled-Santa red sounds perfect.
ReplyDeleteI was headed out tomorrow to hit the super sale at the fabric store to get some Christmas making supplies. You have convinced me to hit the Goodwill first. Maybe I'll need more fixings!
ReplyDeleteThat is SO adorable, and I can use all the ideas I can get this year - with money tight we need good creative ideas for gifts! Thanks for the tip about digging around too!
ReplyDeleteThat is really cute...I wish I had the imagination it took to shop Good Will and garage sales for stuff like that...
ReplyDeleteI love the blocks, and the sled, and the Goodwill tips. Thanks, SITSta.
